Mangalore, Dec 26: Former Chief Minister and leader of the opposition in the legislative council D V Sadananda Gowda said that the Chief Minister and home minister George should take stock of the law and order situation in coastal Karnataka.

He said the law and order situation has deteriorated in the last six months.

Mr Gowda was speaking after inaugurating the 90th birthday celebration of former Prime Minister Atal Behari Vajpayee here on Wednesday he said law and order situation in the state has collapsed.

He said the CM and Home Minister should review the incidents right from gang rape of a medical student in Manipal to murder of BJP leader in Ankola and kidnap and blackmailing of two students in Deralakatte.

“The incidents have made us to bow our head in shame. These incidents also send a wrong message to the world. Underworld elements have become active in the coastal belt,” he said.

He said that the CM and the Home Minister should visit the district to discuss the situation and also to get first-hand information on various incidents that have taken place in the recent months and take measures to check such incidents and punish the guilty.

'AAP's simplicity should not trouble to common man'

Welcoming 'simplicity' concept of Aam Admi Party, Mr Gowda has said that shunning of facilities associated with power cannot be much useful in a democratic set up.

He said that the simplicity should enter into politics. However, it should not cause any trouble to common man.

A chief minister should have a CM residence, to help the general public to meet him and air their grievances, he said.

Stating that the AAP is moving away from its original cause, he said that there is dissidence within the party after the announcement of ministerial candidates. This shows that even the AAP MLAs are after the power.

Gowda said that the AAP were against the Congress and corruption during their campaign for Lokpal Bill. However, now they are forming the government with the support of the Congress. Is it not a drama? he asked.

'Maoists active in border'

He said adding that the recent central intelligence warning that Maoists are active on the borders of South Indian states border is a cause for concern.

Former CM said: “If the government fails to protect its citizens, then a day will come when the citizens will be forced to use arms to defend themselves. The law and order has worsened owing to the internal squabble in the ruling Congress. Officials are not able to discharge their duties effectively. Anti-social elements have raised their ugly head in the coastal belt without a fear. There is a fearful situation in the Coastal district, wherein the security for a female children is a concern.”

“The recent developments makes one feel that the home department is not existing in the state. The fearful situation reminds one of the days of barbaric incidents that Bihar had witnessed 15 to 20 years ago. The situation is so bad that anti-social elements have attacked the police officers who were on duty. Even the elected representatives  are indirectly supporting them,” he said.

Appoint panel of advocates before Jan 6 to fight arecanut growers' cause

Gowda said that the move of the government to ban arecanut has put growers in distress. The Rs-175 crore package announced by the Union Minister for Agriculture has not reached the growers so far. The BJP government had constituted advocates to defend arecanut growers in the Supreme Court. However, the Congress government withdrew the panel of advocates. If the Congress government fails to appoint a panel of advocates before January 6, to fight for the cause of areca growers, then the BJP will intensify its protest in the State.

He said that Atal Bihari Vajpayee followed principles in life and is a model for all the elected representatives.

Former MLA Jayaram Shetty, BJP district unit general secretary Sanjeev Matandoor and others were present.

Puttur: The long-cherished dream of a government medical college in Puttur has moved a decisive step closer to reality, with the Karnataka State Finance Department granting its official approval for the construction of a new 300-bed hospital.

Puttur MLA Ashok Kumar Rai announced the crucial development to reporters on Monday, confirming that the official communication from the finance department was issued on November 27. This 300-bed facility is intended to be the cornerstone for the establishment of the government medical college, a project announced in the state budget.

Fast-Track Implementation

The MLA outlined an aggressive timeline for the project:

•    A Detailed Project Report (DPR) for the hospital is expected to be ready within 45 days.

•    The tender process for the construction will be completed within two months.

Following the completion of the tender process, Chief Minister Siddaramaiah is scheduled to lay the foundation stone for the project.

"Setting up a medical college in Puttur is a historical decision by the Congress government in Karnataka," Rai stated. The project has an estimated budget allocation of Rs 1,000 crore for the medical college.

Focus on Medical Education Department

The MLA highlighted a key strategic move: requesting the government to implement the hospital construction through the Medical Education Department instead of the Health and Family Welfare Department. This is intended to streamline the entire process of establishing the full medical college, ensuring the facilities—including labs, operation theatres, and other necessary infrastructure—adhere to the strict guidelines set by the Medical Council of India (MCI). The proposed site for the project is in Bannur.

Rai also took the opportunity to address political criticism, stating that the government has fulfilled its promise despite "apprehensions" and "mocking and criticising" from opposition parties who had failed to take similar initiatives when they were in power. "Chief Minister Siddaramaiah has kept his word," he added.

Mangaluru, Dec 15: Air India Express has announced that it will resume direct flight services between Mangaluru and Muscat from March 2026, restoring an important international air link for passengers from the coastal region.

Airport authorities said the service will operate twice a week—on Sundays and Tuesdays—from March 1. The initial flights are scheduled on March 3, 8 and 10, followed by March 15 and 17, with the same operating pattern to continue thereafter. The flight duration is approximately three hours and 25 minutes.

The Mangaluru–Muscat route was earlier operated under the 2025 summer schedule, with services beginning on July 14. At that time, Air India Express had operated four flights a week before suspending the service.

Officials said the summer schedule will come into effect from March 29, after which changes in flight timings and departure schedules from Mangaluru are expected. Passengers have been advised to check the latest schedules while planning their travel.

The resumption of direct flights to Muscat is expected to significantly benefit expatriates, business travellers and others, further strengthening Mangaluru’s air connectivity with the Gulf region.

Mangaluru, Dec 3: A group of Congress workers gathered at the Mangaluru International Airport on Wednesday to welcome AICC general secretary K C Venugopal, but the reception quickly turned into a display of support for Deputy Chief Minister D K Shivakumar.

Venugopal arrived in the city to participate in the centenary commemoration of the historic dialogue between Mahatma Gandhi and Narayana Guru. The event, organised by the Sivagiri Mutt, Varkala, in association with the Mangalore University Sri Narayana Guru Study Chair, is being held on the university’s Konaje campus.

KPCC general secretary Mithun Rai and several party workers had assembled at the airport to receive Venugopal. However, the moment he stepped out, workers began raising slogans backing Shivakumar.

The university programme will be inaugurated by Chief Minister Siddaramaiah.

This show of support comes just a day after Siddaramaiah remarked that Shivakumar would lead the government “when the high command decides.” The chief minister made the comment after a breakfast meeting at Shivakumar’s residence—another public display of camaraderie between the two leaders amid ongoing attempts by the party high command to downplay their leadership rivalry.
