Kozhikode, Apr 29: A tense atmosphere prevailed in Nadapuram and neighbouring areas after five men sustained injuries in a bomb explosion.
Around five people, allegedly involved in the making of crude bombs, suffered injuries in the accident. They were admitted to the Government Medical College Hospital here.
The injured have been identified as Linesh of Naripatta, Vivek of Payamthongu, Linesh of Chelakkad, Jineesh of Vanimel and Vijesh of Theruvamparamba, all said to be CPM sympathizers.
According to hospital sources, one of the five suffered serious burns and lost his fingers. Though they were rushed to a private hospital at Vadakara, they were referred to the medical college hospital. The explosion occurred around 10.30 p.m. when they were making crude bombs in steel containers, the police said.
Meanwhile, a team led by senior police officers from Vadakara traced as many as 11 steel bombs during a spot inspection at Theruvanparamba. Gunpowder and empty steel containers were recovered from the spot.
Third incident
The explosion on Wednesday was the third such incident reported from the Vadakara rural police division in a month.
During Vishu celebrations, a youth from Azhiyoor died in a suspected firecracker blast. The police had then launched an intensive inquiry into the incident following suspicion that he had died while making crude bombs.
In the second incident, a youth hailing from Nadapuram lost his fingers in a crude bomb explosion. It was later found out to be an accident. A detailed investigation is under way.
In the wake of continuing incidents of crude bomb explosions, rural police officers have been asked to step up vigil and patrolling in the politically-sensitive regions of Nadapuram.
Vehicle checking has been intensified on district borders following reports that explosives are being transported from neighbouring districts for making crude bomb.
Violence is not new
Theruvamparamba had witnessed violence in 2001, after suspected CPM workers allegedly molested a woman. Though the accused in the case were later acquitted, it became a campaign issue against the CPM in the run up to the 2011 assembly elections.
Nadapuram had witnessed widespread violence and arson which eventually led to the murder of CPM worker Enthullathil Binu in June 2001. Five IUML workers were killed in 2010 while making bombs at Narikkatteri.
