Mangaluru, Nov 11: Minister for Law, Justice and Parliamentary Affairs T B Jayachandra said that special fast-track courts had been established in all districts of Karnataka for faster disposal of cases of sexual assault.
He was speaking to media persons during his visit to the district Congress office here on Tuesday.
He said that in Karnataka, a total of 281 cases under the POCSO Act have been disposed, while 1,296 cases are still pending out of the total 1,577 cases.
Since the conviction rate has decreased in cases of sexual assault on children and women, the government will take efforts to increase public awareness through an awareness drive, he said.
The minister said that the delay in disposal of cases of sexual assault resulted in witnesses becoming hostile and acquittal of the accused. To prevent this, the Ministry of Law has decided that the witnesses should appear before the magistrate and depose in the court, thereafter which, the judiciary will have the authority to convict the accused based on the initial deposition, he said.
