Bhatkal, Mar 5: Life came to a standstill here on Saturday as the coastal district observed a bandh over provocative remaks against Islam made by its MP and BJP leader Anant Kumar Hegde.
The Uttara Kannada districl wide bandh call given by Majlis-e-Islah wa Tanzeem and other Muslim organisations evoked good response in the Muslim dominant twon of Bhatkal and few others areas in the district.
Meanwhile, as a part of precautionary measures, Deputy Commissioner Ujwal Kumar Ghosh has issued prohibitory order under Section 144 from 6 am to 10 pm. The district administration has also imposed ban on taking out processions or rallies and using loud speaker.
The bandh call was given after the police failed to meet Friday's deadline set by the Majlis to arrest Mr Hegde. The failure of police to nab him despite registering a case against him has enraged the residents of Bhatkal town and Muslims of the district.
All firms, business establishments and educational institutions belonging to Muslims to remain closed for the day. Memorandums were sent to chief minister and home minister through concerned officers in district and taluk headquarters across Uttara Kannada. Muslims in Sirsi and Haliyal also observed bandh.
The Sirsi police ealier this week registered a criminal case against Mr. Hegde for saying, “As long as Islam is there in this world, terrorism will be there. Until and unless we root out Islam from this world, terrorism cannot be eradicated.” Mr Hegde also had called Bhatkal a hub of terrorism.

May be he gave statement for publicity....but at the cost of what....stupids will not do this kind of thing...if he is really a human kind he would have tried bring all people together...is he a MP or orutcher. I think it is better for police to put him behind bar for atleast 10 years.
