Mangalore, Jul 16: Mangalore City Traffic Police on Wednesday began regulating the sound horns on public transport vehicles such as buses and auto-rickshaws in the city, in order to cut down the high-decibel honking on city roads.

Soon after the crackdown began, over 50 buses were intercepted by the traffic police on Wednesday near Lalbagh and Nanthoor junctions and several buses found using high-decibel horns with frequency over 75 decibels were fined.

Armed with sound-level meters to determine the frequency of the horns, the traffic police personnel also removed the high-decibel horns from the buses which were fined.

The devices used by the traffic personnel to determine the frequency of the horns have been obtained by the police team from the state Pollution Control Board.

In the coming days, similar crackdowns will be made in different areas in the city where the traffic is heavy such as Hampankatta, Kankanady, Jyothi etc, to cut down the heavy honking bu buses and auto-rickshaws.
