
Mangalore, Feb 24: It was for the first time that the inmates of Mangalore District Prison got an opportunity to get some fresh air by playing chess.
As many as 30 inmates of the 280 in prison took part in the tournament which was organised in association with United Karnataka Chess Association and jail authorities on Sunday.
The players sported a cap and a t-shirt for the matches.
N S Patil, Chief Judicial Magistrate and chief guest, said jail inmates were very much a part of society. He said, “Chess players are intelligent. Don't stop playing the game.”
Prison Superintendent P S Ramesh said this was the first time the Department was holding a chess competition for prison inmates.
Holding a chess tournament was among the reformative actions of the department. “This helps inmates to think in a positive way and make beneficial use of the time,” Mr. Ramesh said.
The first, second and third prize was bagged by Ravi, Mahesh, and Gopal. Ravi said learning how to play chess was easy and Mahesh said he enjoyed the game. Gopal said he was familiar with the game. Suryakumar and Hamza bagged the fourth and fifth prize. All received certificates for participation.
Inmates have been provided with chess boards and carrom boards.
