Mangaluru, Apr 13: The police in Mangaluru on a busy Monday evening stretched themselves to create a traffic-free corridor. For once, it was not for a VVIP but for a harvested organ of an accident victim that had to reach Bengaluru within 45 minutes for transplantation. The efforts proved successful.

The box containing the liver of Jeevan Vijay Fernandez, reached the Mangalore International Airport within the stipulated time. A special flight is airlifting the heart to Bengaluru.

Minute-to-minute coordination between various departments in Mangaluru helped the organ reach the Airport from A J Hospital at Kuntikana, a distance of around 15 km, within a few minutes. In normal traffic, vehicles sometimes take half an hour to reach this destination.

Recently hearts of donors had been airlifted from Bengaluru to Chennai. However, for the first time a vital human organ was transported from Mangaluru to another city on Monday.

The donor was a 24-year-old brain dead patient at the A J Hospital. The liver had to be transported to the BGS Global Hospitals in Bengaluru where a patient was waiting to receive it.

A resident of Belloor in Bantwal taluk, Jeevan was critically injured in a motorbike accident on April 10 at Adyar near here.

The tragedy took place when Jeevan and his friend were on their way to Mangaluru. It is said that Jeevan was thrown onto the road when he suddenly applied breaks to avoid hitting a pedestrian. After battling for life for two days in the hospital, he was declared brain dead.

Shocked family members decided to donate the vital organs of Jeevan, who was known for his helping nature. However, experts decided to transport only his liver due to lack of facilities in Mangaluru, where in such a procedure is being carried out for the first time.

Two specialists from Bengaluru along with two surgeons from AJ Hospital successfully removed the live liver from body of body of Jeevan and put inside the safe box.

Dr Sudheesh Rao of AJ Hospital, said that vital organs of brain dead patients can be transplanted to others. He said that within 45 minutes, the liver should reach BGS Global Hospital, wherein it will be placed in a special solution and transplanted to another patient.

It is learnt that Jeevan’s father Jerome Fernadez is a cancer patient. Jeevan’s sister’s marriage was scheduled for May 4.

It may be recalled here that Apple Computers founder Steve Jobs’ life was extended by two and a half years after being given the liver of a young car crash victim.

Udupi: The pontiffs of Sri Paryaya Puttige Mutt, the sacred seat of Jagadguru Shrimad Madhvacharya Moola Samsthanam, have submitted a proposal to the Prime Minister seeking comprehensive development for Udupi district.

Proposal for International Airport

A key request is the establishment of an international airport. Highlighting that around 1,000 acres of land are available and suitable, the pontiffs noted that the existing Mangalore Airport provides limited international connectivity. They suggested the airport be developed under a Public-Private Partnership (PPP) or as a Greenfield Airport to boost trade, education, healthcare, and spiritual tourism.

Metro and Rapid Transit Connectivity

The proposal also calls for Metro Rail or Rapid Transit between Mangaluru and Udupi. The 55 km coastal stretch experiences heavy daily commuter traffic, causing congestion. The district administration is ready to prepare an initial project report for a Mass Rapid Transit corridor and requested inclusion under national urban mobility programmes to ensure safe, green, and time-efficient regional transport.

Port and Coastal Development

The pontiffs urged the development of an international-standard port with a cruise terminal along Udupi’s coast. They also requested fast-tracking of pending coastal tourism projects and revising Coastal Regulation Zone (CRZ) norms to encourage sustainable infrastructure and hospitality investment.

IT, AI and Technological Infrastructure

Support was sought for an IT and AI Innovation Park with incubation facilities under Digital India and Startup India initiatives. The proposal also emphasized the need for strengthened data security and cloud computing infrastructure to boost India’s technological independence.

Sports and Education Initiatives

The pontiffs requested national sports status for Kambala, along with financial and infrastructure support. They also sought the establishment of an AIIMS in Udupi, a new IIT campus, and approval for an IIM to promote higher education in the district.

Representation to the Prime Minister

Sri Sugunendra Tirtha Pontiff and Sri Sushrendra Tirtha Swamiji represented the pontiffs in submitting the comprehensive development proposal to the Prime Minister during his recent visit.

Mangaluru: In a significant step to curb online hate and intimidation, Mangaluru City Police have registered a suo motu case against multiple Instagram accounts accused of circulating alleged provocative and threatening content.

While monitoring social media activity on Tuesday, Kankanady Town PSI Anitha Nikkam identified the Instagram handle ‘team_targetttt_900’ for posting a hate message alongside images of lethal weapons. Another account, ‘team_nagara_900’, allegedly shared a threatening post targeting activist Bharath Kumdelu, tagging additional pages such as KARAVALI-OFFICIAL.

Several other accounts — including ‘immu_bhai.fan’, ‘target_boy_900’, ‘kings_of_manglore’, ‘team_target_boys.900’, ‘arshad_mangalore’, ‘target_ka19_ullal’, ‘team_target__’, ‘troll_tigersz_900’, ‘tr_group_900’, and ‘team_target_900’ — are also under scrutiny for spreading similar inflammatory material, police said.

Authorities have urged citizens, especially young social media users, to report suspicious pages and avoid engaging with groups that glorify violence or threaten individuals. Online hate can quickly escalate into real-world harm, and police stress that sharing or promoting such content can attract legal consequences.
