The bail was granted by the sixth additional sessions court against a personal release bond of Rs 1 lakh and a condition that the accused should visit the local police station thrice a month and cooperate with the investigators.

While granting bail, judge Puttaranga Swami said that the accused should visit the police station on 1st, 10th and 20th of every month. Besides, if the accused posses a passport, he should surrender it to the police immediately.

Qureshi, a resident of Katipalla, was produced before a magistrate on March 27 by the local police, who claimed that he was arrested on March 26 in connection with the attempt to murder on one Prakash Poojary.

Though Qureshi was in a critical condition, he had claimed that he suffered injuries in an accident on March 25. However, later when his condition worsened he revealed that he was picked up by the CCB police on March 21 and that he was tortured in the illegal confinement until his formal arrest.

Qureshi also claimed that the police had threatened him to implicate him in Karthik Raj murder case (which was still unsolved) and eliminate him in a fake encounter if he revealed the truth before the magistrate that he was tortured in the illegal confinement.

Currently Qureshi is recuperating at the Wenlock Hospital in Mangaluru. The alleged atrocity on Qureshi not only sparked widespread protests but also led to the formation of United Muslim Front in Mangaluru. Besides, former Mangaluru Mayor K Ashraf had recently led a ‘Mangaluru Chalo’ to fight against police atrocities.
