Mangaluru, Jan 11: Mangaluru International Airport (MIA) has received a green signal by the union government to the proposal for two additional aerobridges and an additional parking facility for flights at the airport.

Flight parking facility
In the parking bay at the new terminal building of the airport, there is space available for parking six airplanes simultaneously and space for three airplanes in the old terminal building. Presently, there is a necessity of two additional parking bays at the airport. Each new parking bay is to be constructed at a cost of Rs 2 crore, hence a sum of Rs 4 crore is required for constructing two new parking bays at the airport.
Aerobridge
The international airport already has aerobridge facility to facilitate movement of flight passengers to the flight directly from the terminal gate. Two aerobridges have been brought from Indonesia to be used during boarding and alighting from the flight.
With increase in the air traffic at the airport, the airport requires two more aerobridges for use and had sent a request for their addition. In response to this, the union government has given its approval to this request.
Each aerobridge costs about Rs 2 crore, which will be purchased through a global tender in New Delhi. This will be provided to the international airport by Airports Authority of India (AAI), which has approved the project.
Speaking to Coastaldigest.com, MIA director J T Radhakrishna said that the amount for the two additional parking bays and two additional aerobridges had been sanctioned by the union government and work on the construction of parking bays would begin soon after the tender process was completed. The two aerobridges will be acquired shortly after the construction works are completed, he said.
He said that the requirement of additional parking bays was necessary, in view of the increase in air traffic over the past two years.
The work on the parking bays is expected to be completed by March 2016 and the aerobridges are expected to be installed by June 2016.
