Mangaluru, Nov 15: As part of the National library week from Nov 14, book exhibitions and several other activities will be organised by the Central Library, Mangaluru at the main library and all its branches during the entire week, said Mayor of Mangaluru City Corporation Mahabala Marla.

Mr Marla, who is also the president of Mangaluru City Library Authority, said that city library had 20 branches in MCC limits with a membership of 23,751 readers. On Monday, a new children's section including a play area, browsing centre and competitive study section for aspirants of competitive examinations, he said.
The Central Library, which was started in 1968, has over 84,000 books including those in English, Kannada, Hindi, Tulu, Urdu and other languages. These include around 2,500 competitive books and over 3,000 children's books. Despite a vast collection of books, people are unaware of the various facilities and the number of books available in the library, he said, adding that the local library authority would work towards increasing the reader memberships and visitors in the libraries.
As part of the national library week, various competitions such as essay writing, painting, elocution, debate and others will be held in different branches of the city library. On Monday, a meet of Kannada poets will be held following the formal programme at the city central library, he said.
Members of the authority K Mohammed, Poornima, K Vaman, Dr K P Divakar Shetty and deputy director Raghavendra K V were present on the occasion.
