Mangaluru boy Prathik Nayak tops CET engineering, wants to get into IIT

Mangaluru, May 30: "Though I was sure about getting a place in the top 10, I never expected first rank. I want to study in one of the top IITs of the country,'' an elated Prathik S Nayak said.

CET 1

Prathik, a student of Expert PU College, Mangaluru, has emerged topper in engineering and pharmacy streams in the Common Entrance Test, the results of which were announced on Tuesday. He secured 99.27%.

"I used to study more than eight hours for CET. I want to do engineering in computer science or mechanical engineering. I am also waiting for results of JEE-Advance," Prathik said.

Prathik also secured the 13th rank in the Comed-K entrance examination for entry into private engineering colleges in the state.

Many students in the district have secured ranks in CET results.

Bharat Kumar T, Ansuya Reddy and Soumya Shashidhar Kattimani, who are among the top five rank holders in the B.VSc, Indian System of Medicine and B.Sc (Agri), are waiting for results of the National Eligibility Cum Entrance Test (NEET) to get admission in colleges of thier choice.

All the three are students of Alva's Pre-University College in Moodbidri and these three are among those students who were provided free education by the Alva's Education Foundation.

Bharat, a resident of Kolar, is ranked third in BVSc and fourth in BSc (Agri) streams. Ansuya Reddy, a resident of Yadgir, is ranked fifth in the Indian System of Medicine and Homeopathy. Soumya Kattimani, a resident of Hubballi, is ranked fifth in BSc (Agri).

"I have done well in NEET also and I am confident of getting a medical seat under the government quota," said Kumar. The only son of agriculturist Tippareddy and homemaker Radhamma, Kumar said it's the dream of his parents to see him as a doctor.

Anusuya, younger daughter of agriculturist Shivashankar Reddy and homemaker Renuka, said delayed announcement of NEET as qualification examination for medicine did affect her preparations.

Soumya said her lecturers helped her a lot in preparing for CET. She is now preparing for the entrance examination of Jawaharlal Institute of PG Medical Education and Research being held on June 4. Her father Shashidhar works in the education department in Hubballi and her mother Anasuya is a home maker.

Mangaluru, Dec 15: Educational institutions in Mangaluru that rely on the popular Mangala Stadium for their annual sports events are bracing for an inconvenience as the city's key sporting venue is set to close its gates for a significant upgrade. The stadium is expected to be unavailable for approximately two months starting from January 15, 2026.

The closure is necessitated by a proposed overhaul of the stadium's facilities, with a special focus on upgrading the synthetic track. Pradeep Dsouza, Assistant Director of the District of Youth Empowerment and Sports (DYES), Dakshina Kannada, confirmed the development.

"Experts have visited the stadium, conducted a thorough inspection, and have given the go-ahead for a complete makeover," Dsouza stated. "Funds have been allocated for the project, and we are currently awaiting the final green signal from state officials to commence the work. We anticipate that the work will likely begin in the second week of January. Consequently, we have stopped renting out the stadium to colleges and other organizations in preparation for the upgrade."

The timing presents a logistical challenge for colleges, as many schools have already concluded their sports meets.

"Colleges will now be organizing their events and will need to find alternative locations to host their sports meets," Dsouza added. He suggested a few potential venues, including the Dakshina Kannada police ground, University College grounds, Panambur grounds, Swaraj Maidan in Moodbidri, and the Mangalore University sports grounds in Konaje.

However, many institutions note that finding a comparable venue will be difficult. While the DK police ground and University College grounds are closer to the city center, they do not possess the extensive facilities and infrastructure offered by Mangala Stadium.

Dr. P Dayananda Pai - P Satisha Govt First Grade College, Carstreet, is one such institution dependent on the stadium. Principal Jayakar Bhandary expressed hope for a swift completion of the work. "We expect the work to be completed at the earliest. If not, we will be forced to look for other venues to host the sports day for our students," Bhandary said, highlighting the pressing need for the city's main sporting facility.
