Mangaluru, Mar 26: Residents and visitors of Mangaluru, who had very little in the form of entertainment from parks, now have a reason to cheer as the Tree Park' developed by the Forest Department at Tannirbavi beachfront was inaugurated on Saturday.
Spread over two parcels of land — nine acres of Gurupura river-front land and another 22.5 acres on the beachfront — the Tree Park has plant species from the Western Ghats as well as herbal ones.
Speaking after inaugurating the Sasyodyana', District In-charge Minister B Ramanath Rai said that rare and endangered flora and fauna should be conserved.
“The Tree Park has been developed to spread awareness on the importance of a green cover, development of lung space, conservation of biodiversity and also to promote love for nature,” he said.
Apart from plants, there are terracotta motifs of Kambla, Yakshagana and Bhootakola to provide a glimpse of culture of coastal district. A volleyball court on the beach and a watchtower are a couple of other highlights at the Park. There are 40 such tree parks in Karnataka. A tree park beside a beach is, however, a unique feature.
The minister said that the Forest Department has been organising Chinnara Vanya Darshana', nature camp, Devi Vana' and Sirichandana Vana' and other programmes.
