Mangaluru, May 6: A Mangaluru origin Indian American woman and her husband were gunned down May 4 evening in United States of America by the ex-boyfriend of their grown daughter.

The victims have been identified as Indian American couple - Naren Prabhu, vice president of engineering at Juniper Networks and his wife Raynah Sequeira Prabhu, daughter of Lila Sequeira, native of Karambar, Bajpe in Mangaluru, who currently lives in Mumbai.

Mirza Tatlic (24), who murdered the elderly couple at their San Jose, Calif., home, was also killed by San Jose Police Department officers after a two-hour stand-off with police, in which the gunman held the couple’s youngest son as hostage inside the home.

At the time of the double murder, the Prabhus had a restraining order against Tatlic, who broke up with Rachel Prabhu – the couple’s daughter – last December. After the break-up, Tatlic, who police said had a history of mental illness, posted a series of increasingly disturbing messages to his social media accounts.

Tatlic shot Naren Prabhu in the doorway of his home, then went inside and killed Raynah, according to police reports.

The Prabhus’ eldest son managed to escape and ran outside of the house to call police. He reported that his father had been killed but was not sure if his mother was also dead.

Rachel Prabhu lives out of state and was not home when the shooting occurred.

San Jose police and a SWAT team arrived at the scene, and surrounded the couple’s home, asking Tatlic to let the boy go.

Tatlic released the boy, after he used his cell phone to contact Rachel. The teenager was physically unharmed, San Jose Police Chief Eddie Garcia told reporters at a May 5 press conference.

Police then tried to get Tatlic to surrender peacefully, but the young man refused, according to Garcia. In a conversation with police during the stand-off, Tatlic said he killed Rachel’s parents to cause her pain, just as she had caused him pain when she broke up with him.

Tatlic finally appeared at a window inside the home and pointed a gun at police officers. An unnamed officer fired at the gunman; Tatlic was killed in the exchange. The officer – a 17-year veteran of the force – has been placed on administrative leave.

Tatlic was using a gun that was not registered to him, said Garcia, adding that detectives are investigating how he was able to get the gun.

Garcia told reporters that Tatlic had a history of mental illness, domestic violence, and driving under the influence.

“Say the right things, be the right person, get betrayed, lied to and left for dead,” Tatlic wrote in an Instagram post. “No mercy on the ones you love the most,” wrote the troubled man, who also obliquely referenced a break-up on Dec. 1 last year.

“I don’t want to go through this day in and out misery of missing something that was never mine, only there to destroy me,” Tatlic wrote, ending his post: “f*&k u b*&*h.”

In another Instagram message, Tatlic posted a photo of Rachel, captioning it: “The devil smiles but the eyes sell the evil.”

In one of his final posts, Tatlic hinted at his intent to kill the Prabhus, writing: “Hope I get more than just one. This cost me my lyf.”

“One could infer that this is over a failed relationship. However, the extent of how that really got to this individual still remains to be investigated,” Garcia told reporters at the press conference. “Obviously, this relationship had something to do with his motive. We just don’t know the extent of it.”

“It’s a horrible, horrible crime,” said the police chief. “It’s a tragic, tragic incident perpetrated by evil,” he said.

In an e-mailed statement, Juniper Networks mourned the loss of their vice president. “Juniper Networks is deeply saddened by the recent loss of a long-time employee. We are focused on supporting our employees and their families through this difficult time.”

“The company is mobilizing global support systems and providing help to assist the authorities and members of our community who have been affected,” said the company.

Puttur: The long-cherished dream of a government medical college in Puttur has moved a decisive step closer to reality, with the Karnataka State Finance Department granting its official approval for the construction of a new 300-bed hospital.

Puttur MLA Ashok Kumar Rai announced the crucial development to reporters on Monday, confirming that the official communication from the finance department was issued on November 27. This 300-bed facility is intended to be the cornerstone for the establishment of the government medical college, a project announced in the state budget.

Fast-Track Implementation

The MLA outlined an aggressive timeline for the project:

•    A Detailed Project Report (DPR) for the hospital is expected to be ready within 45 days.

•    The tender process for the construction will be completed within two months.

Following the completion of the tender process, Chief Minister Siddaramaiah is scheduled to lay the foundation stone for the project.

"Setting up a medical college in Puttur is a historical decision by the Congress government in Karnataka," Rai stated. The project has an estimated budget allocation of Rs 1,000 crore for the medical college.

Focus on Medical Education Department

The MLA highlighted a key strategic move: requesting the government to implement the hospital construction through the Medical Education Department instead of the Health and Family Welfare Department. This is intended to streamline the entire process of establishing the full medical college, ensuring the facilities—including labs, operation theatres, and other necessary infrastructure—adhere to the strict guidelines set by the Medical Council of India (MCI). The proposed site for the project is in Bannur.

Rai also took the opportunity to address political criticism, stating that the government has fulfilled its promise despite "apprehensions" and "mocking and criticising" from opposition parties who had failed to take similar initiatives when they were in power. "Chief Minister Siddaramaiah has kept his word," he added.

Udupi, Dec 1: A horrific case of alleged rape has unfolded in Udupi, where a worker from a Hindutva organisation, previously arrested and released on bail for harassing a young woman, is now accused of waylaying and sexually assaulting her.

The arrested individual has been identified as Pradeep Poojary (26), a member of the Hindu Jagarana Vedike's Nairkode unit in Perdur.

Poojary had allegedly been relentlessly harassing the young woman, pressuring her to marry him. When she bravely stood up to him and refused his demands, she filed a formal complaint at the Hiriyadka police station. He was subsequently arrested in that initial harassment case but was later granted bail.

According to police reports, driven by the same malicious grudge, Poojary allegedly intercepted the woman again on November 29. While she was walking through a deserted area, the accused is claimed to have threatened her by grabbing her neck. When she again refused to marry him, he allegedly proceeded to rape her.

The survivor immediately informed her family about the traumatic assault. Following this, her parents lodged a complaint at the Udupi women’s police station.

Police arrested Poojary again and produced him before the court. He has since been remanded to judicial custody.

Udupi: A 40-year-old NRI from Udupi has reportedly lost more than Rs 12.25 lakh in an online investment scam operated through Telegram.

According to a complaint filed at the CEN police station, Leo Jerome Mendonsa, who has been working in Dubai for the past 15 years in computer accessories sales, maintains NRI accounts in Karkala and Nitte.

On November 12, 2025, Mendonsa was added to a Telegram group called Instaflow Earnings by unknown individuals. Users identified as Priya and Dipannita persuaded him to invest in “Revenue Tasks.” Initially, Mendonsa transferred Rs 1,100 multiple times and received the promised returns, encouraging him to continue.

On November 14, another user, Nishmitha Shetty, directed him to register on a website, digitvisionuoce.cc, and invest Rs 4 lakh in various shares. Over the next few days, he made multiple transfers totaling Rs 12,25,000, including Rs 50,000 via Google Pay, believing the scheme was legitimate.

After receiving the money, the alleged handlers stopped responding, and neither the invested amount nor the promised profits were returned.

The CEN police have registered a case under Sections 66(C) and 66(D) of the IT Act and Section 318(4) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS), and investigations are ongoing.
