Mangaluru, May 9: The Students Islamic Organization of India, Dakshina Kannada, organized a marathon from Ambedkar circle to Nehru Maidan in the city under the theme, Save water - Save Lives' to create awareness on the major issue faced by common man - scarcity of water.
The marathon was inaugurated by Shantaram Kundar, inspector, Mangaluru North Police Station on Sunday morning. Children from different institutions and from different places of the district participated in the marathon.
The event, which was started at 7.30 am, concluded with prize distribution ceremony. The cash prize of Rs 5000 was given to marathon winner Ayan from Kudroli, and a cash prize of Rs 3000 was given to runner up Ahkam from ullal.
The prizes were distributed by Kripa Alva, Director, Commission for Protection of Child Rights, and Anath Murdeshwar, Sub Inspector, Mangaluru North.
Speaking on the occasion, Ms Alva said if anyone finds a dropout child, call 1098 or contact concerned officials for enrollment of dropouts back to school in the district with a vision of dropout free district.
She also emphasized the need of saving water and use of rain harvesting techniques for saving water. “Avoid unnecessary wastage of water,” she said.
SIO leader Rafeeq Bidar, DK SIO president and marathon convenor Nizam, SIO state advisory committee member Talha Ismail were present. Danish Panemangaluru compered.
