Mangaluru, May 19: In a major crackdown on shrill horns in buses plying from the city on Tuesday, the city traffic police began removing high-decibel horns from city buses and service buses to check the nuisance of loud honking in Mangaluru.
Under the guidance of DCP (Crime and Traffic) Vishnuvardhana, the team of traffic police led by ACP Traffic Uday Nayak went around the city removing shrill horns with a sound volume of 65 decibels and higher from all city buses and service buses. Using a handheld device to measure the decibel levels of the horns in each bus, the traffic police personnel have removed and confiscated horns found violating the traffic norms from buses parked at bus stands before they began operating for the day.
Speaking to Coastaldigest.com, ACP Uday Nayak said that the team members had confiscated loud horns from as many as 150 buses on Tuesday. The bus owners and drivers were let off with a warning after confiscating the horns for violating the traffic norms. If the same buses will be found using high-decibel horns again, they will be fined and action will be taken against the bus drivers, he said.
He informed that the operation was conducted early in the morning at bus stands and depots (instead of intercepting the buses on roads) to avoid inconvenience to passengers once the buses start running as per their schedule. Personnel from the traffic police conducted the crackdown for around four hours on Tuesday morning, with handheld volume-measuring devices, he said.
DCP N Vishnuvardhana said that the crackdown on shrill horns had been resumed after a month following complaints from the citizens about the nuisance. In addition to buses, the traffic police will also monitor loud horns in other vehicles also, he said, informing that most of the buses found violating this norm had been fined.
