Mangaluru, May 12: In a gut wrenching tragedy, a city based youth and his female friend were killed after a car in which they were travelling veered off the road and plunged into a river at Tannirbavi on the outskirts of the city on Tuesday evening.

The deceased have been identified as Tasheel Ahmed (23), son of Mohammed Rafiq, a resident of Falnir, and Prineeta Suvarna (22) from Karwar, who was staying at her grandmother's house in Balmatta in the city.
The tragedy took place when the duo were heading to Tannirbavi on a Hyundai i20 car.
Assistant Commissioner of Police (Traffic) Uday Naik said Tahseel was driving towards the beach. His friend was also in the car. Mr. Naik said Tahseel went past Kulur Bridge and entered the road leading to Tannirbhavi.
"Tahseel lost control over the car after he overtook a motorcycle. The car swerved towards the left and fell into the Phalguni river," said Mr. Naik adding that the duo died on the spot.
