Manipal: Surveyor drowns in Swarna river; Varsity staff rescued

Manipal, May 10: A surveyor, who went swimming across the Swarna from Herga, got caught in the strong currents and was carried away on Monday.

According to the Manipal police, Sandeep Kulal (21), a resident of Kinnigoli, is yet to be traced. Search operations continued on Tuesday.

Udaya Poojary, assistant estate manager of Manipal University, who also had gone for swimming along with Kulal, was rescued.

The two ventured into the river to fetch a boat from the other side of the river to take remaining members of the team of surveyor to the other side.

The four member team had come to survey the land belonging to Manipal University adjacent to the river bank.

When the two were crossing the river, they were dragged by under currents. Fortunately, a few sand mining labourers, who witnessed the tragedy managed to rescue one among them.

A case has been registered at Manipal police station.
