Mangalore, Jun 17: In a blatant shame for the committee members of a recently built Masjid in Mangalore taluk, a fight between two groups owing allegiance to the same Masjid took a violent turn on Tuesday with members of one group brutally assaulting members of another group.

A H Farooq (47) and Zakir Hussain (45) who sustained severe injuries in the attack have been admitted to a private hospital. Hospital sources said that both are out of danger. However, a tense atmosphere prevailed in Alekala following the incident.
It is learnt that the South Kanara Salafi Movement (SKSM) had appointed Farooq as president and Hussain as secretary of the newly built Masjid in 2012 for a period of three years.
However, the very next year, without any prior notice the SKSM sacked the duo and appointed two other members – D H Farooq and Fakruddeen as president and secretary respectively.
Unconvinced by the sudden move, Hussain approached the court, which termed the new appointments as unlawful, and asked SKSM to reinstate the old office bearers, sources said.
When SKSM decided not to pay heed to the court 's decision Hussain filed a complaint against 16 members of the new committee including the president and secretary with jurisdictional Ullal police station charging them of insulting the local court. Hussain also mentioned in his complaint that he was not allowed to enter the Masjid. The hearing was scheduled for Wednesday, June 18 in this regard, sources said.
It is suspected that the miscreants might have assaulted the duo in a bid to prevent them from appearing before the court during the hearing.
According to the injured duo, at least eight persons including Shahid, Nazir, Iqbal, Farooq, Faizal and Shafeeq involved in the attack. Two among the assailants also said to be injured. Ullal police are investigating the matter.
