Mangalore, Jan 10: Garbage still not collected from your house? Waste still causing inconveniences to you and others in your lane? 8123666266 – That's the number you got to send a SMS to register your complaint with the Mangalore City Corporation (MCC).

A demonstration cum briefing on the new SMS complaint service on Solid Waste Management which has been launched by the MCC, was held on Thursday at the Corporation's office in the presence of Mayor Gulzar Banu and N Yogish Bhat, MLA and Deputy Speaker, Karnataka Legislative Assembly.

To register their complaint, citizens have to send a SMS to 8123666266 in the prescribed format i.e. mention of their Ward number followed by the particulars of the complaint. (For ex: Ward 57 – Waste not collected from Pinto Lane). The citizen would in response receive an acknowledgement SMS from the Control Room stating that his/her complaint has been registered and a message has been forwarded to the Field Officer with an assurance of resolving the problem within a specific time period (Ex: 24 hours, 48 hours etc). The citizen, in the acknowledgement SMS will be notified of his complaint number along with the mobile number of the Field Officer concerned. Similarly, a SMS would be sent to the Field Officer from the Control Room informing him about the problem in the said ward. The SMS complaint service will be open 24x7.

Briefing media persons, Mr. Bhat said that the state government has cleared three packages with regard to Solid Waste Management which will help Mangalore go a step further in becoming a cleaner city. One of them is the approval for vehicle tracking wherein vehicles collecting and carrying loads of garbage would be tracked using the GPS system. The other two are 'M-Governance (mobile governance) and SMS complaint service wherein citizens can complaint to the MCC in case of lapses in door to door and garbage collection.

Builders to be brought under CSR ambit

Mr. Bhat said that the government is considering formulating a separate policy wherein builders would be asked to contribute to the development of the economically weaker sections of the society from their building projects as part of CSR (Corporate Social Responsibility).

The policy will be exclusively for private builders and there would be no question of government land being involved, Mr. Bhat said.

The government is yet to discuss and decide on the percentage of benefit for the economically weaker sections of the society in this builders' policy, he said.

Mangaluru, Dec 3: A group of Congress workers gathered at the Mangaluru International Airport on Wednesday to welcome AICC general secretary K C Venugopal, but the reception quickly turned into a display of support for Deputy Chief Minister D K Shivakumar.

Venugopal arrived in the city to participate in the centenary commemoration of the historic dialogue between Mahatma Gandhi and Narayana Guru. The event, organised by the Sivagiri Mutt, Varkala, in association with the Mangalore University Sri Narayana Guru Study Chair, is being held on the university’s Konaje campus.

KPCC general secretary Mithun Rai and several party workers had assembled at the airport to receive Venugopal. However, the moment he stepped out, workers began raising slogans backing Shivakumar.

The university programme will be inaugurated by Chief Minister Siddaramaiah.

This show of support comes just a day after Siddaramaiah remarked that Shivakumar would lead the government “when the high command decides.” The chief minister made the comment after a breakfast meeting at Shivakumar’s residence—another public display of camaraderie between the two leaders amid ongoing attempts by the party high command to downplay their leadership rivalry.

Mangaluru, Dec 15: Air India Express has announced that it will resume direct flight services between Mangaluru and Muscat from March 2026, restoring an important international air link for passengers from the coastal region.

Airport authorities said the service will operate twice a week—on Sundays and Tuesdays—from March 1. The initial flights are scheduled on March 3, 8 and 10, followed by March 15 and 17, with the same operating pattern to continue thereafter. The flight duration is approximately three hours and 25 minutes.

The Mangaluru–Muscat route was earlier operated under the 2025 summer schedule, with services beginning on July 14. At that time, Air India Express had operated four flights a week before suspending the service.

Officials said the summer schedule will come into effect from March 29, after which changes in flight timings and departure schedules from Mangaluru are expected. Passengers have been advised to check the latest schedules while planning their travel.

The resumption of direct flights to Muscat is expected to significantly benefit expatriates, business travellers and others, further strengthening Mangaluru’s air connectivity with the Gulf region.
