Modi, Amit Shah have cleared my CM?path, age no bar: Yeddy

May 28, 2017

Bengaluru, May 28: State BJP president B S Yeddyurappa has said age will not come in the way of his becoming the chief minister.

In an interaction with journalists in Bengaluru on Saturday, the former chief minister said he was now 74 and would enter his 75th year by the time a new government was formed in Karnataka.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi and BJP national president Amit Shah have already announced that he (Yeddyurappa) will be the chief ministerial candidate. There is no confusion in this regard, Yeddyurappa asserted.

Modi, soon after becoming prime minister in 2014, had announced that leaders above 75 years should not hold any administrative post in Central or state governments. Accordingly, Anandiben Patel as Gujarat chief minister and Najma Heptulla as Union minister for minority affairs gave up their posts.

If this norm is followed here, then Yeddyurappa will find it tough to become the chief minister in case the BJP comes to power in 2018. But for the BJP, all rules seem to have exceptions and the ‘under 75’ norm seems to be optional.

Yeddyurappa said, “Shah, when he gave me the responsibility of accomplishing Mission 150, had clarified the age norm to me. The age criterion is not applicable to Karnataka.”

Replying to another question, the BJP strongman claimed that he is free of corruption charges. Hence, there are no hurdles for him to become the chief minister. All chief ministers in Karnataka had denotified land, he said.

“It is not that I was the only chief minister who had denotified government land. Only two cases pertaining to denotification are pending against me,” he pointed out.

He said he would contest from Shikaripur in keeping with “people’s wish”. His son B Y Raghavendra is now the Shikaripur MLA. The party would decide from where Raghavendra would contest, he added.

Asked what action is being taken to tackle infighting in the party, Yeddyurappa said there are only minor differences but no feud.

Asked why BJP senior leaders are not accompanying him during his ongoing tour of drought-affected areas, he said, “Opposition leaders are busy with their work. It is not possible for them to give up their work and join the tour.”

Referring to the Mahadayi river sharing issue, Yeddyurappa said he is ready to take up the responsibility of talking to the chief ministers of Goa and Maharashtra and get justice for Karnataka. Similary, Chief Minister Siddaramaiah and his seniors should take the responsibility to convince the Opposition leaders in those two states, he added.

The BJP leader said that during his visits to drought-hit areas, he found goshalas without sufficient fodder.

“There is no proper food facility for farmers. Is the chief minister so poor that even basics cannot be provided?” he asked.

The BJP leader also said if the state government fails to waive farmers’ loans by July-end, then three lakh farmers would be brought to Bengaluru to stage a protest.

Mangaluru, Dec 15: Air India Express has announced that it will resume direct flight services between Mangaluru and Muscat from March 2026, restoring an important international air link for passengers from the coastal region.

Airport authorities said the service will operate twice a week—on Sundays and Tuesdays—from March 1. The initial flights are scheduled on March 3, 8 and 10, followed by March 15 and 17, with the same operating pattern to continue thereafter. The flight duration is approximately three hours and 25 minutes.

The Mangaluru–Muscat route was earlier operated under the 2025 summer schedule, with services beginning on July 14. At that time, Air India Express had operated four flights a week before suspending the service.

Officials said the summer schedule will come into effect from March 29, after which changes in flight timings and departure schedules from Mangaluru are expected. Passengers have been advised to check the latest schedules while planning their travel.

The resumption of direct flights to Muscat is expected to significantly benefit expatriates, business travellers and others, further strengthening Mangaluru’s air connectivity with the Gulf region.

Bengaluru: 'Nati koli saaru' (country chicken curry) considered one of Chief Minister Siddaramaiah’s favourites along with steaming hot idlis was on the breakfast menu at Deputy CM D K Shivakumar’s residence on Tuesday, according to official sources.

The spread also included 'nati koli' fry, vada and pongal, among other items, they said.

In an apparent show of unity, Siddaramaiah visited Shivakumar’s residence for breakfast, just days after the two leaders shared a meal amid a simmering power tussle in the state Congress.

Siddaramaiah drove to the Deputy CM’s residence in Sadashivanagar, where he was received by Shivakumar and his brother D K Suresh, who is a former Congress MP.

Suresh and Kunigal MLA H D Ranganath, a relative of Shivakumar, joined them for breakfast, which featured a mix of vegetarian and non-vegetarian dishes.

Speaking to reporters later, Siddaramaiah said Shivakumar had invited him during his visit to the CM’s residence for breakfast on Saturday.

Asked about the difference between the two meals, the chief minister said, "At his (Shivakumar’s) house it was non-veg, while at my house it was veg. He is a vegetarian, I am a non-vegetarian. I had not prepared non-veg. I told DK to get chicken from the village as you won’t get the original in Bengaluru."

Shivakumar said he had initially invited Siddaramaiah to his residence, but the CM had suggested visiting his place first and reciprocating later. "It was a vegetarian breakfast at the CM’s house on Saturday," he noted.

"Today, I invited him (the CM) to my house. He enjoyed the breakfast, which had his Mysuru taste," Shivakumar added. At this point, Siddaramaiah remarked that Shivakumar’s wife is also from Mysuru.

Saturday’s breakfast at Siddaramaiah’s official residence, held as part of efforts by the Congress high command to ease tensions in the leadership dispute between the two, reportedly included idlis and sambar, according to official sources.
