Lucknow, Jun 18: A month after Karnataka cadre IAS officer Anurag Tiwari was found dead on the road in the state capital, the CBI formally launched its investigation into his mysterious death.

A CBI team on Saturday took possession of the documents, including the FIR, from the local police. It also took possession of the CCTV footage of the city based restaurant, where Tiwari and one of his friends and also an IAS officer, had dined a day before being found dead.

Police sources here said that the CBI team was likely to visit the spot, where Tiwari's body was found, as well as the government guest house, where he had been staying, on Monday.

Tiwari's brother Mayank said that he would apprise the CBI of the ''true facts'' with regard to the matter. ''I will meet CBI officials and tell them about the true facts about the case,'' he said.

Tiwari, who was commissioner, food, civil supplies and consumer affairs department in Karnataka, was found dead here last month. His body was found lying on the side of the road a few metres away from the Guest House.

Tiwari’s postmortem report was inconclusive and the doctors preserved his viscera and heart for further forensic examination to ascertain the cause of death. The death of the IAS officer also triggered a political storm in UP with BJP and Congress getting engaged in sharp exchange of words

UP police had formed a Special Investigation Team (SIT) to probe the death but it could not make any breakthrough.

Apparently irked over the failure of the SIT to make any headway in the case, Tiwari's family members had demanded a CBI probe.

Various theories made round after Tiwari's death. While the family members alleged that he had fallen victim to a conspiracy hatched by his superiors, who could have been exposed by him, the police said that ''drug overdose'' could also be a cause of death.
