Moodbidri, Jan 17: The 75th All-India Inter-university Athletics Meet began on a colourful and feisty note, at the newly-laid synthetic track at Swaraj Maidan here on Friday, where as many as 3,390 athletes from 240 different universities took part in the meet.
The athletics meet was organised by Rajiv Gandhi University of Health Sciences (RGUHS) and Government of Karnataka, in joint association with Alva’s Educational Foundation, Moodbidri.
Inaugurating the athletics meet, Rajiv Gandhi University of Health Sciences Vice-Chancellor Prof K S Ravindranath said that sports and athletic activities were integral in a student’s overall development and progress, along with academic qualifications. Sports and physical competitions train students in overcoming challenges in their lives and enable them to lead their lives with discipline, healthy body and sound mind, he said.
Presiding over the inaugural function, Dr M Mohan Alva revealed plans for the upgradation of the synthetic track provided by the state government in recognition of sports and tournaments being organised and achievements of sports achievers from the region.
Several colourful contingents from different universities across the country, displaying their cultural diversity and uniqueness, elicited a lot of enthusiasm and cheer from the audience in the march past. Principal secretary to the sports department Nagalambika Devi inspected the parade and march past.
On the occasion, universities giving special impetus to sports such as Mahatma Gandhi University – Kottayam, Punjab University – Patiala, Maharshi Dayanand University – Rohtak, Calicut University, Guru Nanak Dev University – Amritsar, University of Madras, Acharya Nagarjuna University – Guntur, University of Delhi, University of Mumbai and Mangalore University were felicitated, along with 11 coaches.
