Mangaluru, Jan 25: The Alva’s Education Foundation located at Moodbidri on the outskirts of the city on Thursday witnessed yet another suicide. This time a II PU (science stream) student allegedly jumped off the fifth floor of the college building.
Rachana (18), hailing from Chitradurga district, died in a hospital after the fall. Police sources said that the student left behind a suicide note which stated that she took the extreme step due to niggling health issues and poor academic performance.
According to police, there were no classes due to revision holidays. All students used to come to library from their respective hostels after 8am. Rachana as usual came to library around 8.30am. Later on, she went around her class room building and jumped off from fifth floor of the building. The severely injured victim was rushed to a private hospital in Mangaluru where she succumbed to her injuries in the noon.
Police said in the suicide note she stated that she was taking the extreme step as she was suffering from blood cancer and her scores were poor in physics exam. Her parents, who stay in Chitradurga were informed about the incident and have reached to Mangaluru.
Expressing shock over the incident, institution chairman Dr M Mohan Alva said that he would completely cooperate with the police in the case. Brushing aside possibilities of any foul play in the death of the student, he said that the teenager ended her life due to personal reasons.
It can be recalled here that in July 2017, Kavya (15), an SSLC student and a promising young badminton player was found hanging in the hostel room of the same institution. Her death had sparked massive protests against the institution. On January 8 this year, Tejas (17), a first PU science student had committed suicide in the boy’s hostel of the same institution over personal reasons. In the past too several suicide cases reported from the Alva’s college and hostel.
