Mangaluru, Nov 13: Dozens of residents of Jokatte village, which is loca-ted adjacent to Mangaluru Refinery and Petrochemicals Limited (MRPL) on Thursday staged a protest to against the pollution being caused by the phase III plant of MRPL.
The protest comes a day after the massive oil and waste discharge from the phase III plant of MRPL polluted a stream in Jokatte.
The agitators, who gathered outside HPCL entrance, symbolically issued warning to MRPL by blocking a stream connecting to it.
Organized under the banner of Jokatte Nagarika Horata Samiti, a rights group of local residents, the protest lost for a couple of hours.
Y D Salian, Deputy Manager(Administration), who rushed to the spot to give clarification on behalf of MRPL, had to face the wrath of agitators, who raised slogans against him.
He dismissed that claims of willful dumping of waste in the stream and said that a malfunctioning in the pumps led to a “small” leakage from the pipes.
However, Muneer Katipalla, the state president of DYFI, who was part of the protest, accused MRPL of willfully discharging waste through stream.
“If the resident of Jokatte failed to see the oil waste being released through stream the MRPL would have continued to do so even today,” he said.
The waste oil discharge started near the phase III plant of MRPL on Tuesday night and continued through Wednesday morning.
