Gadag, Sept 7: A 45-year-old man and his wife were brutally murdered by the latter’s kin at Basapur near Mulagund in Gadag district on Wednesday.

The victims - Ashraf Ali Dodmani and Somavva alias Aminabi (38), both native of Mulagund, had fled to Mangaluru after marrying secretly 13 years ago.
After staying in Mangaluru for a few years, they had shifted family back to Mulagund while Ashraf Ali had continued to work in Mangaluru. He had returned to Mulagund recently for the Muharram festival.
On Tuesday Somavva, along with her husband, had gone to her parents’ home in Basapur when her brother Devappa Hotte quarreled with her and reportedly asked her not to come to Basapur.
On Wednesday, when the couple returned to Basapur, Somavva’s brother attacked them with an iron rod killing them on the spot. Fearing for his life, he, subsequently, surrendered before the Shirahatti Police four kilometres away.
Clarifying that it was not honour killing, Superintendent of Police K. Santhosh Babu said that Somavva had had a quarrel with her brother on Tuesday. And, on Wednesday, the couple were murdered. Only investigation would reveal the reason for the murder, he said.
