Mangalore, July 9: Unequal access to assets such as land, water and forest, poor conditions of work and payment, lack of public shame and fear of law, lack of role models and humanity, lack of vigilance in the society are the root causes for the corruption said, Prof. Rita Noronha, a Member of Constitutional Movement.
She was speaking in a function organized by 'Constitutional Movement' to discuss the corruption and Lokpal Bill.
Categorising the causes as structural and socio-cultural, Ms Noronha said that the society itself had a tendency to promote the corruption. She said 'tolerance tendency' built in the society promotes favoritism and corruption.
She said that there was no mechanism to prosecute the criminals. “The laws have become tooth-less. Secrecy, lack of transparency and accountability which we have promoted are the reason for the large magnitude of corruption,” Ms Noronha pointed out.
Lolaksha, Udayashankar, BG Varghese, Renny D'Souza were present on the occasion.
