Mangalore, July 14: In what appears to be a violation of protocol, Vidyaprasanna Theertha Sripadangalavaru of Subrahmanya mutt has shown disrespect to the State-anthem at a State level Dasa Sahitya Sammela which was commenced at Town Hall here on Thursday.

Seer was present at the programme to 'grace the occasion' in the absence of Pejavara mutt pontiff Vishweshatheertha seer.

The seer was stuck to his adorned chair not bothering to stand up as a mark of respect even as the naada geete (state anthem) was being sung by a group of students before commencing the programme.

Interestingly, the violation took place right under the nose of the Kannada literateurs and the custodians Kannada Sahithya Parishath including its former President Harikrishna Punaroor, President Nallur Prasad and DK District President Pradeep Kumar Kalkura. It was only guests on the stage and the audience who stood up when Nada Geethe was sung even without the master of ceremony requesting the people to do so.

As part of Kuvempu's birth centenary celebrations, the then State Government led by SM Krishna had officially declared Kuvempu's poem 'Jai Bharatha Jananiya Thanujathe' as Naada Geethe. In the order passed then, it was clearly stated that while the Naada Geethe is sung, those present must stand up in respect.

This violation has once again raised serious doubts among common people that Swamijis do not come under the jurisdiction of law.

It may be noted that the issue of adopting the poem as State-anthem had sparked off a controversy when the Government earlier decided to adopt the version of the poem without the reference to Madhwacharya.

Though Kuvempu's writer-son, KP Poornachandra Tejaswi, who was known for his radical views had opposed to any move to include the name of Madhwacharya in the Naada Geethe, two of the seers of Madhwa Mutts in Udupi- Vishvesha Tirtha Swamiji of Pejawar Mutt and Suganendra Tirtha of Puttige Muth-had adamantly demanded for the inclusion of name of Madhwacharya.

It was Harikrishna Punaroor who first protested against the exclusion of the name of Madhwacharya from the Nada Geethe.

Ironically, the very same Vidyaprasanna Theertha Sripadangalavaru also belongs to one of Madhwa Mutts and believes the philosophy of Madhwacharya!

Government programme or religious programme?

Interestingly, though Sammelana was a government sponsored convention, it had a religious touch with Dharmasthala Dharmadhikari Dr D Veerendra Heggade being the guide of whole programme and with the blessings of Pejavara Mutt and Vishwa Hindu Parishath Chief MB Puranik as one of the guests.

Mangaluru, May 3: The Mangaluru City Corporation will resort to water rationing from May 5 as the Thumbe vented dam, which supplies drinking water to the city, is facing a shortage in water storage.

Instead of daily supply, water will be supplied on alternate days, the Executive Engineer (Water Supply) at the corporation said in a release.

The release said that water will be supplied to Mangaluru City North on May 5. There will be no water supply to Mangaluru City North on May 6. Instead water will be supplied to Mangaluru City South on May 6. Likewise the supply on alternate days will continue.

The inflow in the Netravathi has stopped, the release said, requesting people to cooperate with the corporation and not waste water for washing vehicles and other purposes.

An engineer at the corporation said that water level at the dam stood at 4.27 m on Wednesday against the full storage level of 6 m. If water is supplied daily to the entire city (Mangaluru City North and Mangaluru City South) the existing storage will last only for 16 days, the engineer said. Hence the decision to supply water on alternate days has been taken to supply water till May-end.

Udupi: Udupi became the second city on the Karnataka coast after Mangaluru to launch water rationing, a senior official said on Tuesday.

Commissioner of the Udupi City Municipal Corporation Rayappa said that the rationing system will come into force from Wednesday and will continue till the water in the reservoir reaches comfortable levels.

The dam built across the Swarna river at a place called Baje, which is the only source of water for Udupi city, recorded 3.25 meters of water as against the top level of 6.30 meters.

The decision of water rationing will be reviewed periodically until the reservoir regains its fullest levels, the official said.

The Mangaluru City Corporation resorted to water rationing on Saturday following declining water levels in the reservoir built across the Nethravati river at Thumbe.

Several women, believed to be victims of Prajwal Revanna, have left their homes in Karnataka's Hassan district over the last ten days, according to media reports.

These departures reportedly come amid fear and stigma after their identities became public due to the circulating video clips showing the women who were allegedly sexually assaulted by Prajwal Revanna.

"The entire district is in H D Revanna’s control. You speak ill about them and chances are high that it will reach them, because the family and the party have a large following," a shopkeeper in Hagare - 20 km from Hassan – was quoted as saying by the news paper.

Hassan is the bastion of the JD(S) supremo Deve Gowda, and Prajwal, his grandson, is the sitting MP.

The family of the woman whose complaint was the basis of the first FIR against Prajwal has now left their home, the publication reported, citing a neighbour who said, "The woman worked at Revanna’s house as a house help. Some of her videos started to circulate and then, her house was seen locked. We don’t know when she left."

Notably, a former Zilla Panchayat member has also filed a rape case against Prajwal, and in that village many women who worked for the party formerly are now incommunicado, a JD(S) leader told the publication. "We noticed many of the party women deleting their photos with Prajwal on social media. In some instances, men are questioning their wives about their association with the MP. It is shattering the lives of many women in the district," he said.

The local leader added that the former Zilla Panchayat member was there on April 24, but no one had seen the family since the videos came out.

The case is currently being probed by an SIT team and when they reached the Revanna residence, party workers were reportedly heard talking about the women. "I know this woman, she lived close to our residence and was very active in JD(S) activities. Her house is locked… she has small children," one said, as per IE.

Another shopkeeper added, "It was really wrong to reveal the faces of the women. I know some of them, and they have gone into hiding. We don’t know whether they can return."

He noted that it is impossible to survive in Hassan while fighting a case against the Revanna family.

While Prajwal's father, H D Revanna is in SIT custody, a Blue Corner notice has been issued against the sitting MP.
