LPG disconnection fear grips consumers, thousands flock to the DC office

Mangalore, July 26: More than 600 LPG consumers have visited the Deputy Commissioner's office on Monday and submitted various documents including the RR Number of their electricity meter in a bid to retain their cooking gas connection.

People were seen flocking to the Food and Civil Supplies department at the D.C. Office in large number from morning and most of the anxious visitors had brought documents relating to their connection, ration card, electricity bill along with them.

Separate counters have been set up at the D.C. office premises to deal with the influx of people seeking to know the fate of their LPG connection and to restore the same in the event of them being disconnected.

Despite additional computer units and 'may I help you' counters being arranged, a large number of people were found crowded around the work tables.

“On Monday alone, more than 600 people have given their RR numbers. In the last three four days more than 2,000 consumers have given their RR numbers. Those who have submitted their electricity bills need not panic about their connection being disconnected. But those who have not submitted the bill will have their connections snapped,” said Chinnappa Gowda, the deputy commissioner.

He also made it clear that the consumers need not visit the DC office personally. They can obtain the status of their LPG connection through their mobile phones. The method is simple. Type in KLVS and click space bar, type in the gas agency's landline code, then landline number and send the SMS to 924335523. The consumer will get the details, he added.

He also agreed that the people who did not know how to operate computers would inevitably throng the DC office and promised to provide all the help for the anxious customers by increasing the number of staff and other facilities.

He also said the department has taken notice of the complaint about the non-cooperation of certain gas agencies in the verification exercise and urged the gas agencies to provide the required information to the consumers at their respective premises.

Speaking about the difficulty being faced by the consumers, Prabhakar Sharma, additional DC, said that the LPG connection of a number of personnel at the DC office has also been suspended.

“We are carrying out the operation to comply with the government order. There is no other means than this to put an end to the problem of illegal connections,” he said.

Sharanabasappa, the Deputy Director of the Food and Civil Supplies department, appealed to people not to panic as there was 15 day time to rectify the problem. “There will be no disconnection immediately. But, I cannot say if the deadline would be extended beyond 15 days. It is up to the government to decide on this,” he added.

There are 3,24,903 LPG connections in the district. Among which 2,03,225 consumers have submitted the required documents. The remaining 1,21,678 connections could be suspended after verification.

Mangaluru: Dakshina Kannada Zilla Panchayat High School in Harekala, popularly known as Padma Shri awardee Harekala Hajabba’s school, is gearing up to inaugurate its first batch of Pre-University (PU) courses starting June 1.

The government issued an order to elevate the school established by Padma Shri awardee Harekala Hajabba to the status of a PU College a few months ago.

The School Education and Literacy Department (PU Education) has formally sanctioned the upgrade for the school.

CD Jayanna, the deputy director of PU Education, confirmed that all necessary approvals have been obtained from the government to initiate PU classes.

“Hajabba’s school will kick off PU classes for its inaugural batch on June 1. We have appointed a senior lecturer as the interim principal for the PU college. Presently, the school possesses the essential temporary infrastructure to begin the I PU batch. Plans are underway to enhance the infrastructure for the PU college in the future. Currently, the school boasts adequate classrooms and facilities to commence PU classes,” stated Jayanna.

Harekala Hajabba, an orange vendor, personally erected the school in his native village, New Padpu in Harekala, situated approximately 35 km from Mangaluru. For several years, he has tirelessly petitioned the government for the establishment of a PU college.

Expressing his gratitude, Hajabba mentioned that 19 students who recently completed their SSLC examinations are poised to enroll in the new PU college. He added, “We anticipate enrollment from neighboring villages as well. Both the interim principal and the PU education department have been diligently orchestrating the necessary arrangements to initiate classes.”

He extended his appreciation to the government, local representatives, and officials for their unwavering support.

Congress leader Pawan Khera on Monday, April 29, shared a letter purportedly written by BJP leader Devaraj Gowda to the Karnataka state president of the saffron party expressing concern about the pendrive containing sleazy videos of JD(S) leader and Lok Sabha MP Prajwal Revanna.

The letter was apparently written on December 8, 2023.

The letter, written in Kannada by the Hassan BJP leader states that 2,976 clips were already with Congress leaders and would be ammo for the grand old party during the Lok Sabha elections. The letter also states that if Revanna is allowed to contest under the NDA banner, it is likely to negatively impact the BJP's image in the state.

Sharing this letter, Khera launched an attack on the BJP, asking why the party had chosen to enter into an alliance with JD(S) despite knowing about the pendrive. He also questioned the lack of action, sharing the stage with Prajwal Revanna, and asked who helped him 'escape to Germany'.

Khera also questioned PM Narendra Modi's silence on the matter. Notably, the PM has been vocal about women suffering sexual abuse elsewhere in the country, when a leader of the opposition party has been involved. Modi attacked the TMC government over Sheikh Shahjahan's actions in Sandeshkhali, which allegedly involve sexual harassment and illegal land grabbing.

The Congress leader, however, remained confident that Modi would stay mum on the Hassan sex scandal issue.

"Modi ji will be in Karnataka the entire day today. I can guarantee that he won’t find the courage to utter even a single word on this horrific case in the state wherein his alliance’s politician went around recording thousands of sex videos of several women in his pen drive, and has now absconded abroad!," Khera said on X (formerly Twitter).

While Karnataka CM Siddaramaiah has ordered a special probe into the incident, the JD(S) has distanced itself from Prajwal with H D Kumaraswamy saying that while he wanted to wait for facts to come out after the probe, there was no question of forgiving someone who had committed a crime as per the law.

A sexual harassment and stalking case has been filed against former Karnataka Minister H D Revanna and his son Prajwal, who is at the centre of the Hassan scandal.

A woman complainant said that she worked in Revanna's house from 2019 for three and a half years. During her time there, Revenna allegedly misbehaved with her, as did Prajwal, according to the woman's claims. She also claimed Prajwal sexually assaulted her repeatedly.

She also claimed the MP had used obscene language with her daughter during video calls, forcing her to block the number and quit her job.

H D Revanna is the elder son of JD(S) supremo and former PM H D Deve Gowda, and Prajwal is the party patriarch's grandson.
