Mangalore, November 1: A local court has acquitted five among six people, who were accused in the murder case of Chetan Shetty, who was stabbed to death by miscreants at his shop near Morgan Gate, here, two-and-a-half year ago.
Those who have been acquitted in the case are Hameed Sarfan, Mohammad Azharuddin, Mohammed Ashraf, Mohammed Musthafa and Althaf, all residents of Suratkal and surrounding area.
R M Shetter, the judge of Dakshina Kannada district First Sessions Court, on Monday passed the acquittal order citing the lack of evidences against five persons arrested by the police in connection with the brutal murder occurred on November 28, 2009, under the limits of Pandeshwar Police Station.
In the charge sheet, policemen had accused six persons from Suratkal and surrounding area of involving in the murder. They had also succeeded in arresting five among them, while one of the accused is still at large.
While three among the five arrested had walked free on bail, remaining two had been languishing in jail since two-and-a-half years.
After a prolonged hearing the judge exonerated the five accused in the case, of all the charges levelled against them by the prosecution.
However, charges against Mohammed Farooq, the fourth accused in the case, who evaded the arrested, will continue, sources said.
Veteran lawyer Purushotham Poojary argued on behalf of the accused.
