Mangalore, December 14: Eight members of a gang of professional dacoits, hailing from Dhar district in Madhya Pradesh, were arrested and of stolen silver items worth around Rs 13 lakh were recovered following an investigation which began two months ago, said Dakshina Kannada Superintendent of Police Abhishek Goyal.

The arrested are Madiya Bhuriya (40) son of Hasu, Ushan Bilal (38) son of Bheelu Bilal, Mohan Singh alias Munsa (30) son of Sur Singh, Amar Singh alias Amjat (28) son of Singh, Sardar (20) son of Ratan Singh, Madan (32) son of Juvan Singh, and Bahubali (50) son of Kalu, all belonging to Bhil and Bhuriya tribes in Dhar district.

Mr Goyal told media persons on Friday that as per their modus operandi, the dacoits hired vehicles along with drivers from their district, drove all the way to different states, and targeted jewellery stores at locations, after observing them for a couple of days.

The gang had pulled off heists in every place they visited, and have been operating in various districts like Gujarat, Chhattisgarh, Maharashtra, West Bengal, Andhra Pradesh, Tamil Nadu, Kerala and Karnataka, he said.

They would mainly target silver jewellery stores, and after the heists, would dispose the stolen items by selling them to a receiver Vijay Kumar Soni (50) in Dhar district, who was also among those arrested. The team of police personnel was able to identify and capture the thieves based on videos captured on CCTV cameras, he said.

Mr Goyal said that the first member of the gang was arrested on October 4, in Punjalkatte, which gave them information on the gang of dacoits operating in the area. Based on video footages from CCTV from the Nethravati bridge toll gate in Belthangady and also one in Dharmasthala, the team was able to identify them as the ones having robbed Suresh Baliga Jewellery in Bantwal town station limits, Anugraha Jewellery in Mulki station limits, Deepa Jewellery in Udupi district and Savitri Jwellery in Punjalkatte station limits.

The arrested are hardened criminals, who would not hesitate to use physical violence if required. They would carry iron rods along with them during the robberies to ensure they left no witnesses behind, said Goyal. "Bows and several sharp iron-tipped arrows were also seized by the police," he said.

Around 3.5 kilograms of silver stolen from Savitri Jewellery and 10 kilograms stolen from Baliga Jewwllery was recovered. The investigation was led by Puttur Sub-division ASP Anuchet, and included Belthangady Circle Inspector N G Bhaskar Rai, Punjalkatte Station Inspector Jayanand K and Bantwal town station inspector Nagesh K. Devappa Lawrence, Abdul Latheef, PC Ibrahim, PC Praveen, Venkatappa, Shivananda and Bharati from Punjalkatte station, Praveen, Harish and Savita from Belthangady station, Taranath, Kanakaraj and Rohinath from Venur station, and Krishna, Ramesh, driver Vijayeshwar, B N Budki and Mohammed Asif from Bantwal town station, assisted in the investigation, said Mr Goyal.

The police team have also taken into custody a Mahindra Xylo, hired from Madhya Pradesh, which was captured on video by the Netravathi toll gate CCTV camera. One driver has also been arrested as an accomplice of the gang. However, the owner of the hired vehicle traced back to Madhya Pradesh, is not involved in their operations. As the CCTV cameras were helpful in identifying and confirming the accused in the four heists, SP Goyal advised that they should be installed in various locations such as temples, toll gates and jewellery stores in the district.

The taxi owner and the Bhopal police have also been helpful in the police investigation, he added.

Mangaluru, Dec 7: A 34-year-old fruit and vegetable trader in Mangaluru has reportedly lost ₹33.1 lakh after falling victim to an online investment scam run through a fake mobile app.

Police said the scam began in September, when the victim received a link on Facebook. Clicking it connected him to a WhatsApp number, where an unidentified person introduced a high-return investment scheme and instructed him to download an app.

To build trust, the fraudster asked him to invest ₹30,000 on September 24. The trader soon received ₹34,000 as “profit,” convincing him the scheme was genuine. Over the next two months, he transferred money in multiple instalments via Google Pay and IMPS to different scanner codes and bank accounts shared by the scammers. Between September 24 and December 3, he ended up sending a total of ₹33.1 lakh.

When he later requested a refund of his investment and promised returns, the scammers demanded additional payments, claiming he needed to pay a “service tax” first. Even after he paid a small amount, no money was returned, and the scammers continued pressuring him for more.

A case has been registered at the CEN Crime Police Station.

Bengaluru: 'Nati koli saaru' (country chicken curry) considered one of Chief Minister Siddaramaiah’s favourites along with steaming hot idlis was on the breakfast menu at Deputy CM D K Shivakumar’s residence on Tuesday, according to official sources.

The spread also included 'nati koli' fry, vada and pongal, among other items, they said.

In an apparent show of unity, Siddaramaiah visited Shivakumar’s residence for breakfast, just days after the two leaders shared a meal amid a simmering power tussle in the state Congress.

Siddaramaiah drove to the Deputy CM’s residence in Sadashivanagar, where he was received by Shivakumar and his brother D K Suresh, who is a former Congress MP.

Suresh and Kunigal MLA H D Ranganath, a relative of Shivakumar, joined them for breakfast, which featured a mix of vegetarian and non-vegetarian dishes.

Speaking to reporters later, Siddaramaiah said Shivakumar had invited him during his visit to the CM’s residence for breakfast on Saturday.

Asked about the difference between the two meals, the chief minister said, "At his (Shivakumar’s) house it was non-veg, while at my house it was veg. He is a vegetarian, I am a non-vegetarian. I had not prepared non-veg. I told DK to get chicken from the village as you won’t get the original in Bengaluru."

Shivakumar said he had initially invited Siddaramaiah to his residence, but the CM had suggested visiting his place first and reciprocating later. "It was a vegetarian breakfast at the CM’s house on Saturday," he noted.

"Today, I invited him (the CM) to my house. He enjoyed the breakfast, which had his Mysuru taste," Shivakumar added. At this point, Siddaramaiah remarked that Shivakumar’s wife is also from Mysuru.

Saturday’s breakfast at Siddaramaiah’s official residence, held as part of efforts by the Congress high command to ease tensions in the leadership dispute between the two, reportedly included idlis and sambar, according to official sources.
