Mangalore, Jan 1: In a move to defy the traditional and caste based 'inequality', B Janardhana Poojary, Former Union Minister, performed 'Paada Pooje' of a widow from SC/ST community at the Kudroli Gokarnatheshwara Temple in Mangalore making a unique start to his New Year.

Mr. Poojary carried out her 'pooja' and then made the lady perform the 'Aarti' of the Temple deity. Apart from this, he also handed over sari, kumkum, turmeric and flowers, which are considered as auspicious symbols of marriage.

The 76-year-old lady hailing from Sooter Pete by name Anasuya Kumari from the SC/ST-Mundaala community, a retired teacher who had lost her husband four years ago, was chosen by Mr. Poojary for the 'Paada Pooje'. She was welcomed in traditional style at the Temple after which she participated in the 'Chandika Homa'. She was later taken near the sanctum sanctorum of the Temple where she performed 'Aarti' of the deity. Mr. Poojary performed her 'Paada Pooje' and offered 'Teertha'.

Expressing her feelings, Ms. Anasuya said that she is a firm believer of God. “Why I was chosen to be worshipped is something I am yet to comprehend but it was a unique experience”, she said.

The deity was seated on the silver chariot which was taken around the temple premises three times by married women. On the occasion, Mr. Poojary along with others performed 'Urule Seve' against the practice of 'Made Snana'.

Speaking to media persons later, Mr. Poojary said that the 'pooja' of Ms. Anasuya that was performed on the occasion is a symbol of respect not just for women but also the 'Guru' (teacher) as she is also a retired teacher.

“People across the country are enraged over the way women are being harassed and exploited. The society views widows as inferior and they are kept away from taking part in religious rituals. This is not right. The pooja held today was to bring home a point that even women should be given the respect that they deserve,” he said

Mr. Poojary also called for elimination of differences of caste, creed and religion. Speaking on 'Made Snana', and the proposed 'Yade Snana', he said that the latter involves rolling over the 'Naividya' of the deity which is an insulting act. 'Urulu Seve' stands for a cleaner environment and hence 'Urulu Seve' was performed today, he said.

In memory of the Delhi gang-rape victim who passed away recently, 5000 women were given with 5 kgs of rice each.

Mangaluru: In a significant step to curb online hate and intimidation, Mangaluru City Police have registered a suo motu case against multiple Instagram accounts accused of circulating alleged provocative and threatening content.

While monitoring social media activity on Tuesday, Kankanady Town PSI Anitha Nikkam identified the Instagram handle ‘team_targetttt_900’ for posting a hate message alongside images of lethal weapons. Another account, ‘team_nagara_900’, allegedly shared a threatening post targeting activist Bharath Kumdelu, tagging additional pages such as KARAVALI-OFFICIAL.

Several other accounts — including ‘immu_bhai.fan’, ‘target_boy_900’, ‘kings_of_manglore’, ‘team_target_boys.900’, ‘arshad_mangalore’, ‘target_ka19_ullal’, ‘team_target__’, ‘troll_tigersz_900’, ‘tr_group_900’, and ‘team_target_900’ — are also under scrutiny for spreading similar inflammatory material, police said.

Authorities have urged citizens, especially young social media users, to report suspicious pages and avoid engaging with groups that glorify violence or threaten individuals. Online hate can quickly escalate into real-world harm, and police stress that sharing or promoting such content can attract legal consequences.

Udupi, Dec 1: A horrific case of alleged rape has unfolded in Udupi, where a worker from a Hindutva organisation, previously arrested and released on bail for harassing a young woman, is now accused of waylaying and sexually assaulting her.

The arrested individual has been identified as Pradeep Poojary (26), a member of the Hindu Jagarana Vedike's Nairkode unit in Perdur.

Poojary had allegedly been relentlessly harassing the young woman, pressuring her to marry him. When she bravely stood up to him and refused his demands, she filed a formal complaint at the Hiriyadka police station. He was subsequently arrested in that initial harassment case but was later granted bail.

According to police reports, driven by the same malicious grudge, Poojary allegedly intercepted the woman again on November 29. While she was walking through a deserted area, the accused is claimed to have threatened her by grabbing her neck. When she again refused to marry him, he allegedly proceeded to rape her.

The survivor immediately informed her family about the traumatic assault. Following this, her parents lodged a complaint at the Udupi women’s police station.

Police arrested Poojary again and produced him before the court. He has since been remanded to judicial custody.

Udupi: The pontiffs of Sri Paryaya Puttige Mutt, the sacred seat of Jagadguru Shrimad Madhvacharya Moola Samsthanam, have submitted a proposal to the Prime Minister seeking comprehensive development for Udupi district.

Proposal for International Airport

A key request is the establishment of an international airport. Highlighting that around 1,000 acres of land are available and suitable, the pontiffs noted that the existing Mangalore Airport provides limited international connectivity. They suggested the airport be developed under a Public-Private Partnership (PPP) or as a Greenfield Airport to boost trade, education, healthcare, and spiritual tourism.

Metro and Rapid Transit Connectivity

The proposal also calls for Metro Rail or Rapid Transit between Mangaluru and Udupi. The 55 km coastal stretch experiences heavy daily commuter traffic, causing congestion. The district administration is ready to prepare an initial project report for a Mass Rapid Transit corridor and requested inclusion under national urban mobility programmes to ensure safe, green, and time-efficient regional transport.

Port and Coastal Development

The pontiffs urged the development of an international-standard port with a cruise terminal along Udupi’s coast. They also requested fast-tracking of pending coastal tourism projects and revising Coastal Regulation Zone (CRZ) norms to encourage sustainable infrastructure and hospitality investment.

IT, AI and Technological Infrastructure

Support was sought for an IT and AI Innovation Park with incubation facilities under Digital India and Startup India initiatives. The proposal also emphasized the need for strengthened data security and cloud computing infrastructure to boost India’s technological independence.

Sports and Education Initiatives

The pontiffs requested national sports status for Kambala, along with financial and infrastructure support. They also sought the establishment of an AIIMS in Udupi, a new IIT campus, and approval for an IIM to promote higher education in the district.

Representation to the Prime Minister

Sri Sugunendra Tirtha Pontiff and Sri Sushrendra Tirtha Swamiji represented the pontiffs in submitting the comprehensive development proposal to the Prime Minister during his recent visit.
