Mangalore, Feb 8: 'Victoria Iuris - 13', the national-level Law Fest was inaugurated at SDM Law College in Mangalore on Friday in collaboration with the Centre for Post Graduate Studies and Research in Law, Mangalore.

Speaking after inaugurating the Fest, Ashok G Nijagannavar, Principal District and Sessions Judge, DK District, said that law students of today are lawyers of tomorrow and hence they shoulder a huge moral responsibility.

“Lawyers are looked up to in the society. You have great ethical responsibility. It is our moral duty to see that public confidence vested on us is not eroded”, Mr. Nijagannavar said.

Pointing out that advocate fraternity plays a key role in the process of delivery of justice, Mr. Nijagannavar said that for the Bench to give justice, there has to be a proper feedback from the Bar. “If there is adulteration in the material supplied by the Bar to the Bench, there is always a chance of justice getting polluted”, Mr. Nijagannavar said.

It is the duty of a lawyer to place all his material regarding a case before the Bench without worrying about the result, he added.

Mr. Nijagannavar also said that the purpose of legal system is not to increase litigation and make money. Attempts have to be made to discourage litigation and settle disputes through with compromise.

Dr. P S Yedapadithaya, Regsitrar, Mangalore University, who presided over the programme, advised students to use competitions and Fests for 'soul searching' as to how good they are and what more can they do to enhance their skills and abilities.

Stating that there is one category of lawyers who are loudly ineffective and the other who are silently effective, Dr. Yedapadithaya asked students to develop their personality and skills to be more effective in their approach in their careers in future.

Dr. B K Ravindra, Principal, SDM Law College, Mangalore, said that there is a need to inculcate values among students besides imparting them the knowledge of law books and that both teachers as well as parents must shoulder this responsibility.  He asked students gathered at the fest to make use of the opportunity to learn from each other and observe how cases are presented and develop right mannerisms to go with it.

Greeshma Rai, Vice Chairperson, Moot Court Society, welcomed the gathering. Chirag Adiga, Coordinator, Moot Court Society, read out the messages sent by dignitaries. Anish Acharya, Coordinator, Moot Court Society, proposed the vote of thanks. Rohini compered the programme.

Mangaluru: In a significant step to curb online hate and intimidation, Mangaluru City Police have registered a suo motu case against multiple Instagram accounts accused of circulating alleged provocative and threatening content.

While monitoring social media activity on Tuesday, Kankanady Town PSI Anitha Nikkam identified the Instagram handle ‘team_targetttt_900’ for posting a hate message alongside images of lethal weapons. Another account, ‘team_nagara_900’, allegedly shared a threatening post targeting activist Bharath Kumdelu, tagging additional pages such as KARAVALI-OFFICIAL.

Several other accounts — including ‘immu_bhai.fan’, ‘target_boy_900’, ‘kings_of_manglore’, ‘team_target_boys.900’, ‘arshad_mangalore’, ‘target_ka19_ullal’, ‘team_target__’, ‘troll_tigersz_900’, ‘tr_group_900’, and ‘team_target_900’ — are also under scrutiny for spreading similar inflammatory material, police said.

Authorities have urged citizens, especially young social media users, to report suspicious pages and avoid engaging with groups that glorify violence or threaten individuals. Online hate can quickly escalate into real-world harm, and police stress that sharing or promoting such content can attract legal consequences.

SHRIMP.jpg

Mangaluru, Dec 7: A rare bamboo shrimp has been rediscovered on mainland India more than 70 years after it was last reported, confirming for the first time the presence of Atyopsis spinipes in the country. The find was made by researchers from the Centre for Climate Change Studies at Sathyabama Institute of Science and Technology, Chennai, during surveys in Karnataka and Odisha.

The team — shrimp expert Dr S Prakash, PhD scholar K Kunjulakshmi, and Mangaluru-based researcher Maclean Antony Santos — combined field surveys, ecological assessments and DNA analysis to identify the elusive species. Their findings, published in Zootaxa, resolve decades of taxonomic confusion stemming from a 1951 report that misidentified the species as Atyopsis moluccensis without strong evidence.

The shrimp has now been confirmed at two locations: the Mulki–Pavanje estuary near Mangaluru and the Kuakhai River in Bhubaneswar. Historical specimens from the Andaman Islands, previously labelled as A. moluccensis, were also found to be misidentified and actually belong to A. spinipes.

The rediscovery began after an aquarium hobbyist in Odisha spotted a shrimp in 2022, prompting systematic surveys across Udupi, Karwar and Mangaluru. Four female specimens were collected in Mulki and one in Odisha, all genetically matching.

Researchers warn the species may exist in very small, vulnerable populations as freshwater habitats face increasing pressure from pollution, sand mining and infrastructure development. All verified specimens have been deposited with the Zoological Survey of India for future reference.

Mangaluru, Dec 15: Air India Express has announced that it will resume direct flight services between Mangaluru and Muscat from March 2026, restoring an important international air link for passengers from the coastal region.

Airport authorities said the service will operate twice a week—on Sundays and Tuesdays—from March 1. The initial flights are scheduled on March 3, 8 and 10, followed by March 15 and 17, with the same operating pattern to continue thereafter. The flight duration is approximately three hours and 25 minutes.

The Mangaluru–Muscat route was earlier operated under the 2025 summer schedule, with services beginning on July 14. At that time, Air India Express had operated four flights a week before suspending the service.

Officials said the summer schedule will come into effect from March 29, after which changes in flight timings and departure schedules from Mangaluru are expected. Passengers have been advised to check the latest schedules while planning their travel.

The resumption of direct flights to Muscat is expected to significantly benefit expatriates, business travellers and others, further strengthening Mangaluru’s air connectivity with the Gulf region.
