Mangalore, Mar 25: The wave of dissidence within the JD(S) against M B Sadashiva, Dakshina Kannada District President of the party, reached a new high with prominent leaders of the party including big names such as B Nagaraj Shetty and M G Hegde officially confirming their resignations along with 60 others.

Addressing a news conference in Mangalore on Monday, Mr, Hegde said that fed up of Mr. Sadashiva's attitude and modus operandi, more than 50 party members including senior leaders like him have resorted to mass resignation from the party.

“Neither me, nor Nagaraj Shetty or for that matter even Sadananda Shetty made the first move to join JD(S). It was H D Kumaraswamy who invited us to join the party. Mr. Sadashiva has had problems with all three of us besides others. In fact, the day I joined JD(S), he (Mr. Sadashiva) entered into a cold war with me. Although I was officially made in-charge of DK JD(S) by Mr. Kumaraswamy himself, I never made this information public. After joining the party, I realized that the organization that I was working for was M.B.Sadashiva Co. and not JD(S). He has no intention to strengthen the party. He even opposed our fight in favour of the street vendors and fishermen. We were asked not to make statements against Kalladka Prabhakar Bhat. Mr. Sadashiva was always non-cooperative. With him at the helm, it is impossible to strengthen JD(S) in Dakshina Kannada district”, Mr. Hegde said.

Mr. Hegde said that veteran leader Amarnath Shetty was also not in favour of Nagaraj Shetty joining the party. “Both Amarnath Shetty as well as Mr. Sadashiva did not want Nagaraj Shetty to join the party. His induction happened solely because of pressure from H D Kumaraswamy. So is the case with Sadananda Shetty. Unhappy with the recent developments, he has withdrawn from contesting the Assembly elections”, Mr. Hegde revealed.

Mr. Hegde said that although he and other leaders were constantly explaining the situation in the district to Mr. Kumaraswamy, the latter kept advising them to maintain the smooth flow and make peace with Mr. Sadashiva.

“We waited for him to take a decision on his ouster. But now, there is no looking back. We have resigned and this is our final decision. There is no question of going back to the party, even if he (Mr. Sadashiva) is ousted”, Mr. Hegde said.

JD(S) leaders present in the meet took strong objection to Mr. Sadashiva's move to expel D M Aslam and Shashiraj Shetty from the party following a review meeting after the MCC elections. “People like Mr. Aslam, Shashiraj Shetty and Sadananda Shetty have spent money from their pockets for the ULB poll campaigning, unlike Mr. Sadashiva. Instead, he held a review meet after the polls were over and took the decision to expel Mr. Aslam and Shashiraj Shetty”, Mr. Hegde said.

Dr. Ibrahim, who also resigned from the post of General Secretary of the party on the occasion, said that JD(S) bagged only two votes in Mr. Sadashiva's own booth in the recent ULB polls. “He has not voted for the party himself. What kind of a district President is he?” Mr. Ibrahim asked.

Shoukath Ali, Former President, Konaje Gram Panchayat, Uday Kumar, Core Committee member of the party, Ranjth Malli, Core Committee member, P B Basheer, Working Secretary, JD(S) Bantwal constituency, Pradeep Karkera, are among the 60 odd JD(S) members who have resigned from the party. These are “first phase”  resignations and more resignations will follow, Mr. Hegde said.

Mangaluru: In a decisive move to tackle the city’s deteriorating sanitation infrastructure, the Mangaluru City Corporation (MCC) has announced a massive ₹1,200 crore action plan to overhaul its underground drainage (UGD) network.

The initiative, spearheaded by Deputy Commissioner and MCC Administrator Darshan HV, aims to bridge "missing links" in the current system that have left residents grappling with overflowing sewage and environmental hazards.

The Breaking Point

The announcement follows a high-intensity phone-in session on Thursday, where the DC was flooded with grievances from frustrated citizens. Residents, including Savithri from Yekkur, described a harrowing reality: raw sewage from apartments leaking into stormwater drains, creating a "permanent stink" and turning residential zones into mosquito breeding grounds.

"We are facing immense difficulties due to the stench and the health risks. Local officials have remained silent until now," one resident reported during the session.

The Strategy: A Six-Year Vision

DC Darshan HV confirmed that the proposed plan is not a temporary patch but a comprehensive six-year roadmap designed to accommodate Mangaluru’s projected population growth. Key highlights of the plan include:

•    Infrastructure Expansion: Laying additional pipelines to connect older neighborhoods to the main grid.

•    STP Crackdown: Stricter enforcement of Sewage Treatment Plant (STP) regulations. While new apartments are required to have functional STPs, many older buildings lack them entirely, and several newer units are reportedly non-functional.

•    Budgetary Push: The plan has already been discussed with the district in-charge minister and the Secretary of the Urban Development Department. It is slated for formal presentation in the upcoming state budget.
