Background

The region fell under Madras Presidency and later when the states were reorganized on linguistic lines, Mysore state was formed which was soon named as Karnataka. In 1956 the state got its present form and in 1957 elections, this region was named 'Mangalore 1'. Vaikunt Baliga of the Congress with 19533 votes defeated his opponent Shantharam Pai of the CPI who bagged 10001 votes. Independent candidate Laura Pais and Prabhakar of Bharathiya Jana Sangha were also in the fray.

Shantharam Pai of CPI tasted defeat again in 1962 when M Srinivas Nayak of Congress won in this region. However, independent candidate Laura Pais bagging 9,588 votes was a surprising aspect. In 1967, M Srinivas Nayk from the Congress was re-elected.

In 1983 Bharathiya Janata Party set its foot into the Karnataka Assembly from this constituency for the first time. However, during the next two elections, the Congress assured its victory. In 1994 N Yogish Bhat of the BJP won in the constituency and continued the culture of victory till 2008, a romping four consecutive victories during the period.

Highlights

This constituency has 38 of the 60 wards of the Mangalore City Corporation. So far, the electoral battle has been between two national political parties- the Congress and the BJP. No other party has even made its presence felt here.

Mangalore City Corporation was formed in 1983 and since then the Congress had monopolized the region. However, the Congress was defeated in 2008 by the BJP. But, as the five year term was coming to an end, a mayoral elections was held and the ornamental post of the mayor surprisingly fell into the hands of the Congress despite the BJP being in power. During the recently held urban local body polls, the Congress managed to regain power in the MCC.

SHRIMP.jpg

Mangaluru, Dec 7: A rare bamboo shrimp has been rediscovered on mainland India more than 70 years after it was last reported, confirming for the first time the presence of Atyopsis spinipes in the country. The find was made by researchers from the Centre for Climate Change Studies at Sathyabama Institute of Science and Technology, Chennai, during surveys in Karnataka and Odisha.

The team — shrimp expert Dr S Prakash, PhD scholar K Kunjulakshmi, and Mangaluru-based researcher Maclean Antony Santos — combined field surveys, ecological assessments and DNA analysis to identify the elusive species. Their findings, published in Zootaxa, resolve decades of taxonomic confusion stemming from a 1951 report that misidentified the species as Atyopsis moluccensis without strong evidence.

The shrimp has now been confirmed at two locations: the Mulki–Pavanje estuary near Mangaluru and the Kuakhai River in Bhubaneswar. Historical specimens from the Andaman Islands, previously labelled as A. moluccensis, were also found to be misidentified and actually belong to A. spinipes.

The rediscovery began after an aquarium hobbyist in Odisha spotted a shrimp in 2022, prompting systematic surveys across Udupi, Karwar and Mangaluru. Four female specimens were collected in Mulki and one in Odisha, all genetically matching.

Researchers warn the species may exist in very small, vulnerable populations as freshwater habitats face increasing pressure from pollution, sand mining and infrastructure development. All verified specimens have been deposited with the Zoological Survey of India for future reference.

On November 12, 2025, Mendonsa was added to a Telegram group called Instaflow Earnings by unknown individuals. The initial flights are scheduled on March 3, 8 and 10, followed by March 15 and 17, with the same operating pattern to continue thereafter. The flight duration is approximately three hours and 25 minutes.

The Mangaluru–Muscat route was earlier operated under the 2025 summer schedule, with services beginning on July 14. At that time, Air India Express had operated four flights a week before suspending the service.

Officials said the summer schedule will come into effect from March 29, after which changes in flight timings and departure schedules from Mangaluru are expected. Passengers have been advised to check the latest schedules while planning their travel.

The resumption of direct flights to Muscat is expected to significantly benefit expatriates, business travellers and others, further strengthening Mangaluru’s air connectivity with the Gulf region.
