Mangalore North Assembly Constituency is the most favourite constituency for the political analysts. Earlier known as 'Surathkal' constituency, it gained its new name only in 2008. The constituency has Mangalore South, Bantwal and Moodabidri constituencies on its borders. This constituency has national importance attached to it. The constituency has 22 out of 60 wards of Mangalore City Corporation in it.

During the last general elections, the demarcation of constituencies took place. Till then Surathkal remained in Udupi parliamentary constituency. It was only later that it was included in the newly formed Dakshina Kannada Parliamentary constituency.

In the 1957 elections there was a direct fight in Surathkal constituency. Out of 52,903 voters in the constituency 27,418 exercised their franchise. Indian National Congress candidate B R Karkera defeated his Praja Socialist Party candidate Sanjeevanath Aikala. Surprisingly, in 1962, PSP candidate Sanjeevanath Aikala emerged victorious. Out of 32,293 votes, Aikal won 13,148 votes. Congress candidate M Dhoomappa bagged 9,981 votes. Independent candidate Marian Pais bagged 3230 votes and JS candidate bagged Sundara B bagged 529 votes. In 1967 Praja Socialist Party won again with its candidate P V Aithal. K N Alva of Congress tasted defeat this time.

Highlights

In 2004 and 2008 BJP's Krishna J Palemar won here and went on to become cabinet minister. He also served as the District in-charge Minister of Dakshina Kannada. Mr Palemar has to his credit the fame of having bagged the highest number of votes with 70,057 votes.

In 2008 he won with a margin of 12,426 votes. His opponent, B A Moideen Bava of Congress bagged 57,631 votes. JD(S) candidate S V Amin bagged 2,542 votes and independent candidate Anand Gatti bagged 1642 votes.

This constituency had seen two freedom fighters contest the polls in the past and emerge victorious. If Sanjeevanath Aikal won in 1962, another freedom fighter M Lokaiah Shetty emerged victorious in 1983.

Voters

The number of voters has increased by 1563 from the last elections. The total number of voters is 1,98,366 this time as against the 1,82,753 voters of 2008. There are 96,994 men (88,832 in 2008) and 1,01,372 women (93,921 in 2008).

International repute

The constituency is considered to have international importance as most of the factors contributing to economic growth of the region is connected to this constituency.

Industrial giants like MRPL-ONGC is located here. Industrial estate, BASF, MCF and various other industries are here. Premier educational institute, NITK is situated in this constituency. This constituency also has the Mangalore Special Economic Zone along with the New Mangalore Port Trust.

Melkar (Bantwal): The 9th Annual Day celebration of SMR Public School, titled “EXCELLENTIA”, was held on December 15 with great enthusiasm and dignity, marking a significant milestone in the institution’s journey towards academic excellence and holistic development.

The programme was inaugurated by Dr. U. T. Iftikar Ali. The chief guests were Dr. Akhtar Hussain, Mr. P. Moosabba Beary, Mr. Zakaria Jokattre, and Dr. T. M. Abdul Rahuf—whose inspiring addresses motivated the students and appreciated the school’s contributions to education.

The Annual Report was presented by the Headmistress, Ms. Fathimathul Zaheera, highlighting the school’s achievements and progress during the academic year. The Presidential Address was delivered by the Chairman of SMR Public School, Dr. Haji S. M. Rasheed, who emphasised the vital role of education in shaping students’ futures and stressed the importance of discipline, dedication, and consistent effort in achieving 100 per cent academic results.

Secretary of SMR Public School, Mr. Rifath Ahmed, and PTA President, Mr. Sandeep Kumar, were also present on the occasion.

The Annual Day celebration showcased the collective efforts of students and teachers and reaffirmed the school’s commitment to quality education and all-round development. Mangaluru, Dec 15: Air India Express has announced that it will resume direct flight services between Mangaluru and Muscat from March 2026, restoring an important international air link for passengers from the coastal region.

Airport authorities said the service will operate twice a week—on Sundays and Tuesdays—from March 1. The initial flights are scheduled on March 3, 8 and 10, followed by March 15 and 17, with the same operating pattern to continue thereafter. The flight duration is approximately three hours and 25 minutes.

The Mangaluru–Muscat route was earlier operated under the 2025 summer schedule, with services beginning on July 14. At that time, Air India Express had operated four flights a week before suspending the service.

Officials said the summer schedule will come into effect from March 29, after which changes in flight timings and departure schedules from Mangaluru are expected. Passengers have been advised to check the latest schedules while planning their travel.

The resumption of direct flights to Muscat is expected to significantly benefit expatriates, business travellers and others, further strengthening Mangaluru’s air connectivity with the Gulf region.

Mangaluru, Dec 7: A rare bamboo shrimp has been rediscovered on mainland India more than 70 years after it was last reported, confirming for the first time the presence of Atyopsis spinipes in the country. The find was made by researchers from the Centre for Climate Change Studies at Sathyabama Institute of Science and Technology, Chennai, during surveys in Karnataka and Odisha.

The team — shrimp expert Dr S Prakash, PhD scholar K Kunjulakshmi, and Mangaluru-based researcher Maclean Antony Santos — combined field surveys, ecological assessments and DNA analysis to identify the elusive species. Their findings, published in Zootaxa, resolve decades of taxonomic confusion stemming from a 1951 report that misidentified the species as Atyopsis moluccensis without strong evidence.

The shrimp has now been confirmed at two locations: the Mulki–Pavanje estuary near Mangaluru and the Kuakhai River in Bhubaneswar. Historical specimens from the Andaman Islands, previously labelled as A. moluccensis, were also found to be misidentified and actually belong to A. spinipes.

The rediscovery began after an aquarium hobbyist in Odisha spotted a shrimp in 2022, prompting systematic surveys across Udupi, Karwar and Mangaluru. Four female specimens were collected in Mulki and one in Odisha, all genetically matching.

Researchers warn the species may exist in very small, vulnerable populations as freshwater habitats face increasing pressure from pollution, sand mining and infrastructure development. All verified specimens have been deposited with the Zoological Survey of India for future reference.
