Mangalore, Apr 21: A tense atmosphere prevailed in Ullal and surrounding areas after a minor accident led to communal clash and vandalism on Sunday evening.

The town falls under Mangalore Assembly Constituency, which includes many communally sensitive places. The incident has triggered fear among the public, amidst the ongoing political campaign for looming Karnataka Assembly polls.

The trouble broke out after a car returning from Ullal Beach hit a middle aged woman, who was walking along the beach road with her two little children.

The woman identified as Khatheejamma (42) sustained minor injuries in the incident. According to local sources, when the locals waylaid the Indica car, its driver identified as Ganesh, a resident of Masthikatte justified his rash driving and abused the woman.

Enraged over the attitude of driver, a group of local residents thrashed him on the road.

However, the issue led to a clash between two groups belonging to separate communities after Ganesh reportedly informed about the incident to his friends over phone.

Meanwhile, a group of 10 miscreants surrounded one Habeeb (27) a resident of Mukkacheri area and thrashed him brutally. He was later rushed to a hospital for treatment.

Subsequently, around seven men, stopped a 44A bus — from Someshwar to Mangalore — at Ombatukere around 6.30 p.m and threw at least five stones at it, said Loknath Shetty, the driver of the bus who suffered cuts on his arm.

At 7.20 p.m., another bus, route 44D, travelling from Mangalore to Ullal, was pelted with stones by two people, and the driver, Iqbal was injured.

In the meantime, people belonging to two groups gathered in front of Ullal Police Station shouting slogans and demanding action against each other. The police resorted to baton charge to disperse the mob, wherein a few people sustained injuries. They also took two persons identified as Mustafa and Haneef, residents of Belma, into custody on charges of interrupting police personnel while videotaping the mob.

Security has been beefed up in the area following the incident. Additional police personnel and Border Security Force members have been deployed in the area.

The car driver Ganesh was later arrested at a check-post as he entered Mangalore city.

Mangaluru, Dec 7: A rare bamboo shrimp has been rediscovered on mainland India more than 70 years after it was last reported, confirming for the first time the presence of Atyopsis spinipes in the country. The find was made by researchers from the Centre for Climate Change Studies at Sathyabama Institute of Science and Technology, Chennai, during surveys in Karnataka and Odisha.

The team — shrimp expert Dr S Prakash, PhD scholar K Kunjulakshmi, and Mangaluru-based researcher Maclean Antony Santos — combined field surveys, ecological assessments and DNA analysis to identify the elusive species. Their findings, published in Zootaxa, resolve decades of taxonomic confusion stemming from a 1951 report that misidentified the species as Atyopsis moluccensis without strong evidence.

The shrimp has now been confirmed at two locations: the Mulki–Pavanje estuary near Mangaluru and the Kuakhai River in Bhubaneswar. Historical specimens from the Andaman Islands, previously labelled as A. moluccensis, were also found to be misidentified and actually belong to A. spinipes.

The rediscovery began after an aquarium hobbyist in Odisha spotted a shrimp in 2022, prompting systematic surveys across Udupi, Karwar and Mangaluru. Four female specimens were collected in Mulki and one in Odisha, all genetically matching.

Researchers warn the species may exist in very small, vulnerable populations as freshwater habitats face increasing pressure from pollution, sand mining and infrastructure development. All verified specimens have been deposited with the Zoological Survey of India for future reference.

Mangaluru police have arrested a 27-year-old NRI on his return from Saudi Arabia in connection with an Instagram post allegedly containing derogatory and provocative remarks about the Hindu religion, officials said on Monday.

The accused, Abdul Khader Nehad, a resident of Ulaibettu in Mangaluru, was working in Saudi Arabia when the post was uploaded, police said.

A suo motu case was registered at the Bajpe police station on October 11 after an allegedly offensive post circulated from the Instagram account ‘team_sdpi_2025’. Police said the content was flagged for being provocative and derogatory in nature.

During the investigation, technical analysis traced the Instagram post to Nehad, who was residing abroad at the time, a senior police officer said. Based on these findings, a Look Out Circular (LOC) was issued against him.

On December 14, Nehad arrived from Saudi Arabia at Calicut International Airport in Kerala, where he was taken into custody on arrival. Police said further investigation is underway.

Mangaluru, Dec 2: Mangaluru International Airport responded to a medical emergency late on Monday night. Air India Express flight IX 522, travelling from Riyadh to Thiruvananthapuram, was diverted to Mangaluru Airport after a passenger in his late 30s experienced a medical emergency on board.

The Airport’s Operations Control Centre received an alert regarding the passenger’s health condition. The airport activated its emergency response protocol, mobilising the airport medical team and coordinating with stakeholders including CISF, immigration, and customs.

Upon landing, airport medical personnel attended to the passenger, assessed his condition, and arranged to shift him to a local tertiary-care hospital for further treatment. The passenger’s relatives accompanied the passenger, who incidentally received necessary medical care on board, which helped stabilise the situation.

Following the handling of the emergency, the flight departed for Thiruvananthapuram at 2:05 am on Tuesday.

"We appreciate the cooperation of all parties involved, and this incident reaffirms our ongoing commitment to prioritising passenger safety and readiness to respond to unforeseen emergencies with professionalism and care," the Airport spokesperson said.
