Addressing media persons at a news conference in Mangalore on Saturday, Mr. Chinchanasur said that a decision with regard to setting aside Rs.50 crore for sea erosion related problems has already been taken at cabinet meeting on state budget chaired by Chief Minister Siddharamaiah.

When asked about the ADB aided artificial reef project for a permanent solution for the sea erosion problem, R Mohan, Director, Department of Port and Inland Transport told the minister and media persons that tender has been awarded to RDS Project Ltd, Cochin, for setting up of off-shore reefs of 600 mts and 4 in-shore burms.

“The site hand over has already been made to the company to start in-shore berm work. The plan at Ullal also includes alteration of breakwater and its rehabilitation besides beach nourishment. Of the 126 million, which is the total cost of the project, 48.54 million is being spent on the first phase of work at Kotepura and Ullal”, Mr. Mohan said.

Responding to a query on the extension of the third phase of Mangalore fishing harbour, the officials said that 424 metres of diaphragm wall has already been completed. The total cost of the project is Rs.57.6 crores, covering a total length of 1081 metres. Setting up of an auction hall, net mending shed, rest shed for fishermen, gear shed, boat repair yard, bridge connecting phase 2 and 3 of the harbour, road and restaurant are also covered under the project.

On a query on the setting up of Maritime Board for Mangalore, the officials said that the proposal has been sent by the state government to the centre, and is pending for approval before the President.

International Textile Park at Yadgir

The Minister told media persons that a textile park of international standards has been okayed by the cabinet in the budget meeting.

“It will be a Rs. 10,000 crore project. The area has two rivers in Hima and Krishna and possesses railway line. After discussing pros and cons, the Chief Minister has taken this decision”, Mr. Chinchanasur said.

When asked about the initial plan of setting up the textile park at Doddaballapur, Mr. Chinchanasur said that the shift has been made to Yadgir keeping development of the backward district in mind.

“The Nanjuddappa report and the struggle that ensued in getting the Article 371-J of the Constitution implemented for Yadgir, has helped us get that status. As per the report, it was decided that Hyderabad-Karnataka region will be given preference. Raichur is a rich producer of cotton. Besides, the move will generate employment for people of not just Hyderabad-Karnataka region but Bombay-Karnataka region as well”, he said.

Mangaluru police have arrested a 27-year-old NRI on his return from Saudi Arabia in connection with an Instagram post allegedly containing derogatory and provocative remarks about the Hindu religion, officials said on Monday.

The accused, Abdul Khader Nehad, a resident of Ulaibettu in Mangaluru, was working in Saudi Arabia when the post was uploaded, police said.

A suo motu case was registered at the Bajpe police station on October 11 after an allegedly offensive post circulated from the Instagram account ‘team_sdpi_2025’. Police said the content was flagged for being provocative and derogatory in nature.

During the investigation, technical analysis traced the Instagram post to Nehad, who was residing abroad at the time, a senior police officer said. Based on these findings, a Look Out Circular (LOC) was issued against him.

On December 14, Nehad arrived from Saudi Arabia at Calicut International Airport in Kerala, where he was taken into custody on arrival. Police said further investigation is underway.

Mangaluru, Dec 7: A rare bamboo shrimp has been rediscovered on mainland India more than 70 years after it was last reported, confirming for the first time the presence of Atyopsis spinipes in the country. The find was made by researchers from the Centre for Climate Change Studies at Sathyabama Institute of Science and Technology, Chennai, during surveys in Karnataka and Odisha.

The team — shrimp expert Dr S Prakash, PhD scholar K Kunjulakshmi, and Mangaluru-based researcher Maclean Antony Santos — combined field surveys, ecological assessments and DNA analysis to identify the elusive species. Their findings, published in Zootaxa, resolve decades of taxonomic confusion stemming from a 1951 report that misidentified the species as Atyopsis moluccensis without strong evidence.

The shrimp has now been confirmed at two locations: the Mulki–Pavanje estuary near Mangaluru and the Kuakhai River in Bhubaneswar. Historical specimens from the Andaman Islands, previously labelled as A. moluccensis, were also found to be misidentified and actually belong to A. spinipes.

The rediscovery began after an aquarium hobbyist in Odisha spotted a shrimp in 2022, prompting systematic surveys across Udupi, Karwar and Mangaluru. Four female specimens were collected in Mulki and one in Odisha, all genetically matching.

Researchers warn the species may exist in very small, vulnerable populations as freshwater habitats face increasing pressure from pollution, sand mining and infrastructure development. All verified specimens have been deposited with the Zoological Survey of India for future reference.
