The fourth year medical student was abducted and raped by three men in an autorickshaw at 11.30 pm on 21 June while she was returning home from the college.

Search intensified

Intensifying the hunt for culprits who abducted and raped a medical student from Kerala at Manipal near here last week, the police have formed 11 teams with 200 personnel working on the case.

Police are confident of nabbing the accused as they are working on leads secured on the suspects and the auto used for committing the crime, IGP Pratap Reddy said. "We have questioned 15 to 16 people, he added.

Reddy said the police have formed 11 teams and 200 officials are working on the case.

The IGP said the victim, who suffered a fracture in her legs and injuries on her hands and neck, was stable and out of danger and added that she was being constantly being counselled by doctors.

Reddy said the police could not interact with the girl directly and it was done through the doctors and medical attendants, and hence the process was delayed. For the same reason, the investigation too was not moving as fast as expected, he added.

The police were waiting for the girl to recover before questioning her directly, he said.

Police have requested the people to help in searching the accused. Anyone who can identify or give any information about the accused many contact the police on 9480805448 (Manipal police inspector Sadananda Tippannanavar) or 9742512100 or  0820 – 2521257 (Special Cell).

College Bandh

Meanwhile, college students in Manipal and other parts of Udupi district have continued their agitation demanding the speedy arrest of culprits.

All colleges were closed following the protest by students from Manipal University on Monday.

"It has been four days since the incident took place, we want the police to take a speedy action at the earliest," a protestor said.

"Men think we are slaves. We are also students, what will happen to us when we leave the college library. I am scared the same incident can happen to us," a medical student studying at the Manipal University said.

The bandh call was given by district unit of the Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad along with other organisations.

Student organisations

In a press release issued here, the ABVP said that the incidents of atrocities against women were increasing in the Coastal districts of Udupi and Dakshina Kannada. This had created an atmosphere of fear among college-going students. To register their protest against perpetrators of crime against women, the ABVP has called for a college bandh in the district, the release added.

In a memorandum submitted to Home Minister K.G. George at the District Police Office here, the ABVP demanded that the police should immediately arrest the culprits in the gang-rape case.

The police should also take action against the drug rackets operating in Udupi and Dakshina Kannada districts. The government should direct governing councils of all colleges to provide adequate protection to students, the memorandum added.

A delegation of the Udupi District Youth Congress also met Mr. George and urged him to take stern action against the culprits in the gang-rape case.

The district unit of the BJP Mahila Morcha would hold a protest demonstration near the Tiger Circle in Manipal to protest against the gang-rape incident on Monday.

Shyamala Kundar, general secretary of the district unit of the morcha, told presspersons on Sunday that nearly 500 persons were expected to participate in the protest demonstration on Monday. Gang-rape incidents, which used to take place in big cities like Delhi, have now taken place in Manipal. Lack of severe and immediate punishment to the perpetrators of crime was one of the reasons for increasing incidence of atrocities on women.

The trio involved in the gang-rape should be arrested and punished. Manipal, an educational hub with students from across the world, should be provided with adequate security, and CCTV cameras should be installed in strategic points, Ms. Kundar said.

Mangaluru, Dec 16: The Mangaluru City police have significantly escalated their campaign against drug trafficking, arresting 25 individuals and booking 12 cases under the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances (NDPS) Act between November 30 and December 13. The crackdown resulted in the seizure of a substantial quantity of illicit substances, including 685.6 grams of MDMA and 1.5 kg of ganja.

The success of this recent drive has been significantly boosted by the city’s innovative, QR code-based anonymous reporting system.

"The anonymous reporting system has received an encouraging response. Several recent arrests were made based on inputs received through this system, helping police tighten the noose around drug peddlers," said the City Police Commissioner.

The latest arrests contribute to a robust year-to-date record, underscoring the police's relentless commitment to combating the drug menace.

Up to December 14 this year, the police have registered a total of 107 cases of drug peddling, leading to the arrest of 219 peddlers. Furthermore, they have booked 562 cases of drug consumption, resulting in the arrest of 671 individuals.

The scale of the seizure for the year reflects the magnitude of the problem being tackled: police have seized 320.6 kg of ganja worth ₹88.7 lakh and 1.4 kg of MDMA valued at ₹1.2 crore. Other significant seizures include hydro-weed ganja worth ₹94.7 lakh and cocaine worth ₹1.9 lakh, among others.

The Commissioner emphasized a policy of rigorous enforcement: "We ensure that peddlers are caught red-handed so that they cannot later dispute the case or claim innocence."

To counter the rising trend of substance abuse among youth, the Mangaluru City police have rolled out uniform guidelines for random drug testing across educational institutions.

As part of the drive, tests were conducted in approximately 100 institutions, screening an estimated 5,500 to 6,000 students in the first phase. 20 students tested positive for drug consumption during the initial screening.

Students who tested positive have been provided counselling and are scheduled for re-testing in the second quarter. The testing will also be expanded to students not covered in the first phase. In a move to ensure strict implementation, police personnel were deployed in mufti in some institutions. Reiterating a zero-tolerance stance, the Commissioner confirmed that random testing will continue, and colleges have also been instructed to conduct drug tests at the time of admission to deter substance abuse from an early stage.

Puttur: The long-cherished dream of a government medical college in Puttur has moved a decisive step closer to reality, with the Karnataka State Finance Department granting its official approval for the construction of a new 300-bed hospital.

Puttur MLA Ashok Kumar Rai announced the crucial development to reporters on Monday, confirming that the official communication from the finance department was issued on November 27. This 300-bed facility is intended to be the cornerstone for the establishment of the government medical college, a project announced in the state budget.

Fast-Track Implementation

The MLA outlined an aggressive timeline for the project:

•    A Detailed Project Report (DPR) for the hospital is expected to be ready within 45 days.

•    The tender process for the construction will be completed within two months.

Following the completion of the tender process, Chief Minister Siddaramaiah is scheduled to lay the foundation stone for the project.

"Setting up a medical college in Puttur is a historical decision by the Congress government in Karnataka," Rai stated. The project has an estimated budget allocation of Rs 1,000 crore for the medical college.

Focus on Medical Education Department

The MLA highlighted a key strategic move: requesting the government to implement the hospital construction through the Medical Education Department instead of the Health and Family Welfare Department. This is intended to streamline the entire process of establishing the full medical college, ensuring the facilities—including labs, operation theatres, and other necessary infrastructure—adhere to the strict guidelines set by the Medical Council of India (MCI). The proposed site for the project is in Bannur.

Rai also took the opportunity to address political criticism, stating that the government has fulfilled its promise despite "apprehensions" and "mocking and criticising" from opposition parties who had failed to take similar initiatives when they were in power. "Chief Minister Siddaramaiah has kept his word," he added.

SHRIMP.jpg

Mangaluru, Dec 7: A rare bamboo shrimp has been rediscovered on mainland India more than 70 years after it was last reported, confirming for the first time the presence of Atyopsis spinipes in the country. The find was made by researchers from the Centre for Climate Change Studies at Sathyabama Institute of Science and Technology, Chennai, during surveys in Karnataka and Odisha.

The team — shrimp expert Dr S Prakash, PhD scholar K Kunjulakshmi, and Mangaluru-based researcher Maclean Antony Santos — combined field surveys, ecological assessments and DNA analysis to identify the elusive species. Their findings, published in Zootaxa, resolve decades of taxonomic confusion stemming from a 1951 report that misidentified the species as Atyopsis moluccensis without strong evidence.

The shrimp has now been confirmed at two locations: the Mulki–Pavanje estuary near Mangaluru and the Kuakhai River in Bhubaneswar. Historical specimens from the Andaman Islands, previously labelled as A. moluccensis, were also found to be misidentified and actually belong to A. spinipes.

The rediscovery began after an aquarium hobbyist in Odisha spotted a shrimp in 2022, prompting systematic surveys across Udupi, Karwar and Mangaluru. Four female specimens were collected in Mulki and one in Odisha, all genetically matching.

Researchers warn the species may exist in very small, vulnerable populations as freshwater habitats face increasing pressure from pollution, sand mining and infrastructure development. All verified specimens have been deposited with the Zoological Survey of India for future reference.
