
Mangalore, Jul 17: Iron and folic acid supplementary tablets were distributed to the students of government higher primary school, Attavar, as the state-wide 'weekly iron and folic acid supplementary programme' was inaugurated in the school here on Wednesday.
Dakshina Kannada Deputy Commissioner N Prakash launched the programme and distributed the tablets to the students of Class 6- Class 10.
Speaking on the occasion, Reproductive Child Health Officer Dr Rukmini said that the programme had been launched as a preventive measure to counter anaemia in school-going girls and boys in the age group of 10-19. She said that the programme would reach out even to drop-outs in the said age group.
She said that lack of iron in the human body causes anaemia not only in pregnant women, but also growing children and adolescents. Anaemia leads to lack of concentration among student, she said, adding that curative treatment for children suffering from anaemia would also be given if necessary.
Assistant Project Director of Sarva Shikshana Abhiyana (SSA) Geeta, Deputy Director of Public Instruction Moses Jayashekar, president of zilla panchayat standing committee on health and education Asha Thimmappa Gowda and corporator Abdul Rauf were present.
The programme was organised by the district administration, zilla panchayat, Mangalore City Corporation (MCC), in association with Department of Health and Family Welfare and Department of Public Instruction, Dakshina Kannada.
The nation-wide programme was simultaneously launched in Bangalore by Union Minister for Health and Family Welfare Ghulam Nabi Azad.
