Mangalore, Sep 22: Special Personal Secretary will be appointed soon to deal with grievances cropping up in Dakshina Kannada and Udupi district.

Responding to a memorandum after taking part in an interaction programme on development of Coastal Karnataka, on Sunday, Minister for Transportation, Roads and Highways Oscar Fernandes said that the Personal Secretary will handle various cases.

Earlier, Catholic Chamber of Commerce and Industry and MLA, Mangalore south constituency, J R Lobo submitted a memorandum to Oscar Fernandes.

They demanded a four-lane road between Hassan and Mangalore and a flyover at the busy Nantoor Junction in Mangalore, better approach roads to Mangalore International Airport, introduction of mono train to Manipal from Konaje, direct train between Bangalore-Mangalore, divisional railway office in Mangalore, extension run way at Mangalore Airport, eco-friendly industries, institutions, better facilities at Mangalore port etc.

Responding to the memorandum minister Oscar Fernandes said that Bangalore-Hassan highway will be inaugurated in another 15 days. However, the fly-over at Nantoor has been sanctioned and the authorities need the clearance for utility lines.

Shiradi tunnel

He said that Shiradi ghat that provides connectivity between coastal region and state capital will soon have a tunnel using Japanese technology.

“The project which is now in the inception stage, will be taken up as there will be no damage to the forest while implementing the project. Talks have been held with the Japanese counterparts who have responded positively. If the canal becomes a reality then the distance between Bangalore and Mangalore will reduce considerably,” said Mr Fernandes adding that all efforts will be made to commission the project at the earliest.

Answering to a query, Mr Fernandes said, “Niddodi thermal power plant will be dropped if people do not want the project.

Meanwhile Oscar Fernandes and Shalom Fernandes were facilitated by Rachana Catholic Chamber of Commerce and Industry and Bishop of Mangalore diocese.
