Mangalore, Sep 26: The suspected Maoist Horale Saroja (30) from Horale in Koppa taluk in Chikmagalur district who was arrested in 2008 was acquitted by the District and Sessions Court. District and Sessions Court Justice B M Angadi issued the verdict acquitting Saroja declaring that the prosecution has failed to prove the charges against the accused.

Saroja Counsel Shantharam Shetty said Horale Saroja and Devendra were two accused in the list of 12 accused. Remaining are not arrested.

Saroja and Devendra were acquitted under the charges of entering the house and  threatening one Sadananda Shetty alias Kutti Shetty, a timber merchant in Mutlapadi in Muniyalu in Andaru village and setting ablaze  his bike on 27 February 2006. They had also threatened not to inform police and the group pasted pamphlets carrying the Maoist messages on the walls of the house of Sadananda Shetty. They had made him to apologize publicly in front of people and had threatened him to distribute his wealth among poor.

They had escaped with destructive weapons. A case was registered in Karkala rural police station and the then DYSP Santhosh Kumar was the investigating official. Saroja was involved in many other cases and she was acquitted in all her other cases. She had ten cases against her in Udupi district and she was last acquitted in her ninth case 2013, March in Kundapur court .

Devendra is also charged in connection with Edu encounter that took place in 2003 and the murder of Boja Shetty in Nadpalu in 2009.

Public prosecutor T S Jithoori said Saroja is acquitted under the case for want of identification as the complainant and witnesses set back from identifying the accused. They had identified in the initial stages of the case. However, in course of time, they set back from identifying the accused stating that they could not identify the accused as the group of Maoists who attacked had covered their face. Jithoori said although there were sufficient evidences, the case could not stand as both the complainant and the witnesses failed to identify the accused, he added.

‘Will continue to support pro-people movement'

Speaking to mediapersons after coming out of the jail Saroja said “I will continue to support pro-people movement in the society. I was jailed for no reason for the last four years. I want to ask the government and the police, why to punish the poor.”

She said “I have taken part in the pro-people movement and was not a part of Maoist movement. I have not supported Maoist activities,” she said.

Saroja's husband Suresh Naik, who had come to receive her, said “Whether the authorities can bring in changes in the society by arresting the innocents.”

“The police had visited my house on May 11, 2009 and has asked me to accompany them to the police station. When I said I have not committed any crime, they asked me to visit the station and sign. They had obtained 21 body warrant against me. I was forced to spend four and half years in jail without any mistake committed by me. Even my child had to spend three years in jail along with me. My husband was also charged with false cases” she added.

After release from jail she left for her native Hosanagara in Shimoga along with her husband and brother Udaya.

Mangaluru, Nov 30: A 22-year-old college student succumbed to her injuries at a private hospital in Mangaluru today, days after she was hit by a goods tempo while crossing a road in Padubidri.

The deceased has been identified as Preksha, a resident of Nadsalu Billitota in Padubidri. The fatal incident occurred as Preksha, who was returning home after completing her examination, attempted to cross the service road towards Mangaluru. She was struck by a goods tempo approaching from the Udupi side, causing her to fall and sustain a severe head injury.

Prompt action from local residents ensured she received immediate first aid before being rushed to a hospital in Mangaluru for specialised treatment. Despite medical efforts, she passed away while undergoing care.

Preksha was a student at Karavali College, Vamanjoor on the outskirts of Mangaluru city. The tragedy is compounded by the fact that she belonged to a financially vulnerable family, having previously lost her father. She is survived by her mother and brother.

A case related to the accident has been registered at the Padubidri police station, and an investigation is underway to determine the exact circumstances that led to the collision. The incident highlights the growing concerns over road safety, particularly on busy service roads, and serves as a tragic reminder of the human cost of traffic accidents.

Mangaluru: Chaos erupted at Mangaluru International Airport (MIA) after IndiGo flight 6E 5150, bound for Mumbai, was repeatedly delayed and ultimately cancelled, leaving around 100 passengers stranded overnight. The incident highlights the ongoing country-wide operational disruptions affecting the airline, largely due to the implementation of new Flight Duty Time Limitations (FDTL) norms for crew.

The flight was initially scheduled for 9:25 PM on Tuesday but was first postponed to 11:40 PM, then midnight, before being cancelled around 3:00 AM. Passengers expressed frustration over last-minute communication and the lack of clarity, with elderly and ailing travellers particularly affected. “Though the airline arranged food, there was no proper communication, leaving us confused,” said one family member.

An IndiGo executive at MIA cited the FDTL rules, designed to prevent pilot fatigue by limiting crew working hours, as the cause of the cancellation. While alternative arrangements, including hotel stays, were offered, about 100 passengers chose to remain at the airport, creating tension. A replacement flight was arranged but also faced delays due to the same constraints, finally departing for Mumbai around 1:45 PM on Wednesday. Passengers either flew, requested refunds, or postponed their travel.

The Mangaluru delay is part of a broader crisis for IndiGo. The airline has been forced to make “calibrated schedule adjustments”—a euphemism for widespread cancellations and delays—after stricter FDTL norms came into effect on November 1.

While an IndiGo spokesperson acknowledged unavoidable flight disruptions due to technology issues, operational requirements, and the updated crew rostering rules, the DGCA has intervened, summoning senior airline officials to explain the chaos and outline corrective measures.

The ripple effect has been felt across the country, with major hubs like Bengaluru and Mumbai reporting numerous cancellations. The Mangaluru incident underscores the systemic operational strain currently confronting India’s largest carrier, leaving passengers nationwide grappling with uncertainty and delays.

Mangaluru: In a significant step to curb online hate and intimidation, Mangaluru City Police have registered a suo motu case against multiple Instagram accounts accused of circulating alleged provocative and threatening content.

While monitoring social media activity on Tuesday, Kankanady Town PSI Anitha Nikkam identified the Instagram handle ‘team_targetttt_900’ for posting a hate message alongside images of lethal weapons. Another account, ‘team_nagara_900’, allegedly shared a threatening post targeting activist Bharath Kumdelu, tagging additional pages such as KARAVALI-OFFICIAL.

Several other accounts — including ‘immu_bhai.fan’, ‘target_boy_900’, ‘kings_of_manglore’, ‘team_target_boys.900’, ‘arshad_mangalore’, ‘target_ka19_ullal’, ‘team_target__’, ‘troll_tigersz_900’, ‘tr_group_900’, and ‘team_target_900’ — are also under scrutiny for spreading similar inflammatory material, police said.

Authorities have urged citizens, especially young social media users, to report suspicious pages and avoid engaging with groups that glorify violence or threaten individuals. Online hate can quickly escalate into real-world harm, and police stress that sharing or promoting such content can attract legal consequences.
