Mangalore, Oct 23: As part of a nation-wide public awareness campaign on women's safety undertaken by the Akhila Bharata Vidyarthi Parishad (ABVP), members of the organisation's city unit formed a human chain and held a demonstration at KPT Junction here on Wednesday, demanding that the Soujanya murder case be handed over to the CBI and Akshatha murder case be subjected to CoD probe.
Addressing the demonstrators, ABVP state secretary Ramesh K condemned the continuous attacks on women in college campuses and public places, and urged the state and central government to take the issue of safety of women seriously. “Over 14,000 women, including young girls have gone missing in the span of two years between 2009 and 2011 in the entire state. The government should take stringent action against crimes on women and ensure their safety,” he said.
He said that the student organization had taken up this endeavour following a spate of attacks against women in general and women students in particular, across the nation.
Members of the organisation urged that Soujanya and Akshatha murder cases be handed over to higher investigative bodies for a comprehensive probe.
Among their various demands, the organisation urged that crimes against women such as sexual assault, exploitation, acid attack and rape should be tried in fast-track courts to ensure justice without much delay.
The organisation also demanded stringent laws to deter such crimes against women and strict punishment to perpetrators of these crimes. Cases of sexual assault and rape on women should be handed over to special investigation teams with higher authority for probes.
Other demands included check on obscene and derogatory material of women on social networking sites, a mandatory appointment of women constables in all police stations, and forming anti-sexual harassment committees in all educational institutions.
