Mangalore, Nov 11: Chief Minister Siddaramaiah inaugurated the newly built temple of Brahmashri Narayana Guru, at Bajpe-Karambar, on the outskirts of the city on Monday and took part in the'Brahmakalashabhisheka' ceremony. The temple has been built by Brahmashri Narayan Guru Samaja Seva Sangha.

Meanwhile, a newly-built samudaya bhavana was inaugurated by former Union Minister B Janardhan Poojary and dining hall was inaugurated by Minister for Urban Development Vinay Kumar Sorake.

Speaking at a formal inauguration ceremony of the new temple, Mr Siddaramaiah said that the social reformer Narayana Guru had worked for the welfare of the downtrodden and social and educational reformation of the society. He stressed the need for the spiritual and social uplift of the downtrodden by their own efforts through the establishment of temples and educational institutions. While Dalit leader Ambedkar launched the temple entry movement, Shri Narayana Guru launched a different sort of movement in Kerala where he built temples specifically for the downtrodden. This move created awareness and confidence among the people from lower castes, and helped reduce superstitious beliefs and practices to a large extent, he said.

Speaking about the teachings of Shri Narayana Guru, he said that the social reformer had propagated the belief of one god and one religion. A lot of people were exploited in the name of blind beliefs and superstitious practices in olden days. They have to educate and unite themselves and fight for their rights. It is only through education that awareness can be brought, exploitation can be stopped and people can live with dignity, he said.

Rs 2 crore grant for Narayana Guru Study Centre

Mr Siddaramaiah said that the state government had released a grant of Rs 2 crore for establishing Brahmashri Narayana Guru Study Centre at Mangalore University. “Our government is one that works for the welfare of the have nots. We will work for the unprivileged section of people of all communities,” he stressed.

Build more institutions

Calling upon the people to build more educational institutions and hostels for students, the CM said that for greater awareness, schools and institutions should also be built for the poor among the Billava community.

Shaadi Bhagya

Speaking on the occasion, Janardhan Poojary said that the'shaadi bhagya' scheme implemented by the Siddaramaiah-led government for poor Muslim girls should be extended to all communities. “There are underprivileged sections in all communities, including the Brahmin community. Hence, you should bring reservation even for this community,” he urged the chief minister.

He also urged the chief minister to increase the compensation amount for arecanut growers in the state affected by fruit-rot disease, stating that the sum of Rs 4,500 per acre was not sufficient for the growers. He further acknowledged and thanked the chief minister for the grant of Rs 5 crore for the development of Padumale in Puttur taluk, the birthplace of epic heroes Koti-Chennaya.

Scholarships and talent awards were distributed to deserving students during the programme.

The new temple and community hall were blessed by Swami Satyananda Theertha. President of Seva Sangha Vasantkumar Bangera welcomed the gathering and presided over the programme.

District-in-charge minister B Ramanath Rai, minister for fisheries and youth affairs K Abhayachandra Jain, former minister B A Moideen, MP Nalin Kumar Kateel, MLAs Vasant Bangera, B A Moidin Bava and Sunil Kumar, Jaya C Suvarna, Naveen Chandra Suvarna and others were present during the programme.

Mangaluru, Dec 7: A 34-year-old fruit and vegetable trader in Mangaluru has reportedly lost ₹33.1 lakh after falling victim to an online investment scam run through a fake mobile app.

Police said the scam began in September, when the victim received a link on Facebook. Clicking it connected him to a WhatsApp number, where an unidentified person introduced a high-return investment scheme and instructed him to download an app.

To build trust, the fraudster asked him to invest ₹30,000 on September 24. The trader soon received ₹34,000 as “profit,” convincing him the scheme was genuine. Over the next two months, he transferred money in multiple instalments via Google Pay and IMPS to different scanner codes and bank accounts shared by the scammers. Between September 24 and December 3, he ended up sending a total of ₹33.1 lakh.

When he later requested a refund of his investment and promised returns, the scammers demanded additional payments, claiming he needed to pay a “service tax” first. Even after he paid a small amount, no money was returned, and the scammers continued pressuring him for more.

A case has been registered at the CEN Crime Police Station.
