Mangalore, Apr 15: Union Minister for Minority Affairs K Rahman Khan said that it would be the darkest day for the country if BJP candidate Narendra Modi became the Prime Minister of India.
Speaking at a press conference in the city on Tuesday, he said that the prediction of a political party's chances of winning in the Lok Sabha elections based on opinion polls and media surveys was immoral and unethical, as they tended to indirectly influence voters in the country. Since the election process has started, such surveys and opinion polls are unethical as the indicators influence voters in a democratic set-up. They should be condemned, he stated.
He said that the current Lok Sabha elections was a contest between two ideologies, i.e. the ideology of communalism of the BJP versus the ideology of a secular democracy of the Congress.
To the allegation that the Congress had not taken care of minority communities said that the UPA government had taken cognizance of the backwardness of minorities in the country and had taken affirmative action to reverse the situation. He said that the UPA government had taken note of the recommendations of the Justice Rajinder Sachar Committee report and had implemented several suggestions for the upliftment of the minorities in the entire country, including full-fledged scholarships, subsidised educational loans and infrastructure and multi-sectoral development.
He said that the Congress had the possibility of winning over Lok Sabha 20-22 seats in Karnataka based on the fulfillment of several assurances after coming to power in the state.
Kerala Home Minister Ramesh Chennithala said that the goal of Congress was to restore the secular fabric of the country, amid attempts to weaken the secularity of India which would not be allowed. The RSS is unleashing misconceptions and a misinformation campaign through advertisements. In his own words, the functioning of Modi is an autocratic way, which we will not tolerate,” he said.
