Mangaluru, Aug 16: Syed Usman Taqui, an alumnus of PA Engineering College, Mangaluru, who topped the global ranking list for the Erasmus Mundus fellowship, a European scholarship programme, was felicitated by the educational institution in its premises on Wednesday.

Speaking after the felicitation, Mr Taqui said that with knowledge and capability having the utmost importance in the competitive world, students should themselves strive to emerge as toppers by utilising tools such as student loans, scholarships which were sufficiently available.
He further said that although the regional languages were important, it was inevitable to give stress to learning English, which was the main global language, to attain greater heights in the global world. A student should not limit himself to gaining knowledge from textbooks but should also learn invaluable lessons from life, which will help him in honing his talent and capability, he advised the students.
Speaking on the occasion, P A Engineering College vice-principal Dr M K Rameez said that the achievements of Usman had brought pride to the institution. He had been the best out-going student of the college when he passed out in 2012 from the biotechnology section. The belief that he would achieve greater heights has come true, he said, in praise of Usman.
Educational director of the institution Prof Sarfaraz Hasim also spoke on the occasion.
Mr Taqui, one of the five students selected for the fellowship, will carry out research in a consortium consisting of six leading partner institutions from Portugal, Netherlands, Czech Republic, France, Belgium and Italy.
He is the son of Syed Akheel Ahmed, the former vice-chancellor of Yenepoya University and the former Dean and syndicate member of the University of Mysore.
