Mangaluru, Feb 14: A speeding bullet tanker toppled on a busy highway on Sunday at Thumbe on the outskirts of the city causing traffic chaos and panic in the area.
The driver of the ill-fated tanker, identified as Jayaprakash N (27), a native of Tamil Nadu, breathed his last in the intensive care unit of a hospital.
Even though there was no oil spill from the tanker, a tense atmosphere prevailed in the area after the accident. The tanker was transporting liquefied petroleum gas to Bengaluru.
As part of precautionary measure, oil spill prevention experts were called from MRPL. They helped the police in shifting the mighty vehicle from the road.
Fire extinguishers from Mangaluru and Bantwal also rushed to the spot within a few minutes after the accident.
It is learnt that the tragedy occurred after the driver lost control over his vehicle after negotiating a curve near Thumbe College and rammed into a road divider.
The police blocked the road for some time after the mishap. After confirming that there was no leakage, police opened the stretch between Nettarakere junction and Thumbe private hospital for one way traffic till the end of operation. More details are awaited.
