
Belagavi, Jan 11: Two stationary tankers at the Bharat Petroleum Corporation Limited (BPCL) depot at Desur on Belagavi-Goa NH4A, about 18 km from here, accidentally caught fire on Saturday causing panic among staff and village residents.
Four fire fighting machines took more than four hours to extinguish the fire.
Movement of trains between Belagavi-Londa section of South Western Railway division was affected for three hours.
According to official sources at the depot and the police, the fire was noticed around 7.45 a.m. when the staff were unloading fuel from a 70,000-litre tanker into a storage tank.
The tankers which caught fire were attached to a train engine and were among the nearly 50 tankers linked to the train.
The fire spread to another adjoining tank, even as fire tenders, brought from Belagavi and Khanapur, kept their efforts to put off the fire. A thick black cloud of smoke covered the sky.
Sources said there were no casualty or injury to any BPCL staff. Senior official were unwilling to provide information on whether the tankers contained petrol or diesel and the extent of loss.
Senior police officials, including Deputy Commissioner of Police Anupam Agarwal and ambulance services, rushed to the spot.
