Puttur, Aug 2: Nearly 20 to 30 percent of all the passport applications filed at Mangalore regional passport office in Dakshina Kannada come with fake birth certificates, according to sources.

The fake certificates were detected during the police verification of documents during the issuance of fresh passports. To verify the veracity of the produced documents, the issuance date of the birth certificates are checked in the birth registry in the concerned taluk offices.
It is suspected that a racket of fake certificates was operational in Puttur taluk, where applicants could receive a fake birth certificate for a price. The fake certificates produced were detected due to the tightening of procedural rules during police verification.
Filing of a birth certificate is a required procedure, done at the time of birth of an individual. Documents such as original birth certificates are essential for the issuance of a passport. As per the rules, it is mandatory for applicants born after January 26, 1989 to submit a birth certificate to get a passport.
Suspecting a huge racket of fake documents, the police are conducting a detailed investigation in this regard. The police have tightened the verification process after an incident came to light where four engineering students from Maharashtra travelled to Iraq last month by getting their passports issued by submitting fake documents.
Applicants who indulge in violations such as furbishing false documents at the time of submitting their applications for issuance of passports, the passport authorities have the right to block the applicants and impose penalties ranging from Rs 500 to Rs 5000.
