Mangaluru, Sep 21: The top managements of private colleges must join together to combat the uneasy condition created by both government and university to continue imparting quality education without being hampered, said senior educationist Dr H Shantharam, the President of Private College Management Association of Mangalore University Region.

Addressing the Principals and Management Members of Private Colleges in the Annual General Body Meeting held today at Besant Women’s College, he said an earnest effort by the private college managements in the direction of sustainability even in hard situations will be absolutely paid off.
Prof. Bhasker Shetty, the secretary of the Association said, the Association has partially succeeded in stopping the decision of Department of Collegiate Education on tuition fees at the double the standard rate fixed by the Government from implementation for time being. As many as 18 institutions have filed a petition and the case is pending in the High Court.
He said, the Vice Chancellor has been called attention on the exorbitant hike in the affiliation charges i.e., 50 to 60 percent and he has assured that no fresh hike will be made this year. The online admission procedure which the Department of Collegiate Education was asking for the colleges to follow during the beginning of this year, he said, will be deferred as no proper guidance has been provided.
During the discussion Nagar Narayan Shenoy of Besant institutions requested for clarification on the news paper report on Government fixation of quantum of fees for private colleges. To which Dr. H. Shantharam said, the Government has unscientifically fixed the fees pattern for colleges imparting different education. Where a formula for calculation of fees is missing and implementation of which will hamper the functioning of private colleges.
Mr Shenoy said, the minimum salaries must be given to the teachers appointed by management earnestly, for which Dr H Shantharam responded saying, when it is a contract between management and employee government need not intervene. The management is concerned about employees hence it is repeatedly requesting for permanent posts in colleges.
Dr. Dayananda Shetty, Principal of Madhava Pai memorial College, Manipal said the NAAC Accreditation is made mandatory but managing the NAAC team has turned out to be raring a white elephant. The members shared their experiences about the difficulties caused during the NAAC Accreditation.
Sr Supriya, Principal of St. Agnes College said, a student from Jammu & Kashmir had arrived to the college, whose admission was done by the NCRTC of MHRD Department. Unfortunately the student was male and could not be admitted to the women’s college. Dr. Shetty also said that students from other states admitted by MHRD come down here and find problem with the subjects and languages.
Dr. Devaraj from S.D.M. College, suggested there should be discussions with education minister, education policy makers, educationists and managements Vice-Chancellor with constructive purpose of solving problems and improving quality, for which the President Dr Shantharam said in his long career in education he has tried to connect to Secretaries and Ministers. But the arrogance and disinterest on their part has not left him with much of a hope in this regard.
During the meeting the election of office bearers were conducted Dr. H. Shantharam, Prof. K.V. Uthappa, Secretary, Coorg Education Society, Prof. Y. Bhasker Shetty, Administrator, Vidyavardak Sangha Shirva and Sri. C. S.S. Kamath, C.A., were re-elected as President, Vice-President, Secretary and Treasurer respectively. Dr. Sulochana Narayan, Principal, Besant Women’s College proposed the vote of thanks.
