Addressing the Principals and Management Members of Private Colleges in the Annual General Body Meeting held today at Besant Women’s College, he said an earnest effort by the private college managements in the direction of sustainability even in hard situations will be absolutely paid off.

Prof. Bhasker Shetty, the secretary of the Association said, the Association has partially succeeded in stopping the decision of Department of Collegiate Education on tuition fees at the double the standard rate fixed by the Government from implementation for time being. As many as 18 institutions have filed a petition and the case is pending in the High Court.

He said, the Vice Chancellor has been called attention on the exorbitant hike in the affiliation charges i.e., 50 to 60 percent and he has assured that no fresh hike will be made this year. The online admission procedure which the Department of Collegiate Education was asking for the colleges to follow during the beginning of this year, he said, will be deferred as no proper guidance has been provided.

Shantharam said, the Government has unscientifically fixed the fees pattern for colleges imparting different education. Where a formula for calculation of fees is missing and implementation of which will hamper the functioning of private colleges.

Mr Shenoy said, the minimum salaries must be given to the teachers appointed by management earnestly, for which Dr H Shantharam responded saying, when it is a contract between management and employee government need not intervene. The management is concerned about employees hence it is repeatedly requesting for permanent posts in colleges.

Unfortunately the student was male and could not be admitted to the women’s college. Dr. Shetty also said that students from other states admitted by MHRD come down here and find problem with the subjects and languages.

Dr. Devaraj from S.D.M. College, suggested there should be discussions with education minister, education policy makers, educationists and managements Vice-Chancellor with constructive purpose of solving problems and improving quality, for which the President Dr Shantharam said in his long career in education he has tried to connect to Secretaries and Ministers. Udupi, Dec 1: A horrific case of alleged rape has unfolded in Udupi, where a worker from a Hindutva organisation, previously arrested and released on bail for harassing a young woman, is now accused of waylaying and sexually assaulting her.

The arrested individual has been identified as Pradeep Poojary (26), a member of the Hindu Jagarana Vedike's Nairkode unit in Perdur.

Poojary had allegedly been relentlessly harassing the young woman, pressuring her to marry him. When she bravely stood up to him and refused his demands, she filed a formal complaint at the Hiriyadka police station. He was subsequently arrested in that initial harassment case but was later granted bail.

According to police reports, driven by the same malicious grudge, Poojary allegedly intercepted the woman again on November 29. While she was walking through a deserted area, the accused is claimed to have threatened her by grabbing her neck. When she again refused to marry him, he allegedly proceeded to rape her.

The survivor immediately informed her family about the traumatic assault. Following this, her parents lodged a complaint at the Udupi women’s police station.

Police arrested Poojary again and produced him before the court. He has since been remanded to judicial custody.

Udupi: A 40-year-old NRI from Udupi has reportedly lost more than Rs 12.25 lakh in an online investment scam operated through Telegram.

According to a complaint filed at the CEN police station, Leo Jerome Mendonsa, who has been working in Dubai for the past 15 years in computer accessories sales, maintains NRI accounts in Karkala and Nitte.

On November 12, 2025, Mendonsa was added to a Telegram group called Instaflow Earnings by unknown individuals. Users identified as Priya and Dipannita persuaded him to invest in “Revenue Tasks.” Initially, Mendonsa transferred Rs 1,100 multiple times and received the promised returns, encouraging him to continue.

On November 14, another user, Nishmitha Shetty, directed him to register on a website, digitvisionuoce.cc, and invest Rs 4 lakh in various shares. Over the next few days, he made multiple transfers totaling Rs 12,25,000, including Rs 50,000 via Google Pay, believing the scheme was legitimate.

After receiving the money, the alleged handlers stopped responding, and neither the invested amount nor the promised profits were returned.

Puttur: The long-cherished dream of a government medical college in Puttur has moved a decisive step closer to reality, with the Karnataka State Finance Department granting its official approval for the construction of a new 300-bed hospital.

Puttur MLA Ashok Kumar Rai announced the crucial development to reporters on Monday, confirming that the official communication from the finance department was issued on November 27. This 300-bed facility is intended to be the cornerstone for the establishment of the government medical college, a project announced in the state budget.

Fast-Track Implementation

The MLA outlined an aggressive timeline for the project:

•    A Detailed Project Report (DPR) for the hospital is expected to be ready within 45 days.

•    The tender process for the construction will be completed within two months.

Following the completion of the tender process, Chief Minister Siddaramaiah is scheduled to lay the foundation stone for the project.

"Setting up a medical college in Puttur is a historical decision by the Congress government in Karnataka," Rai stated. The project has an estimated budget allocation of Rs 1,000 crore for the medical college.

Focus on Medical Education Department

The MLA highlighted a key strategic move: requesting the government to implement the hospital construction through the Medical Education Department instead of the Health and Family Welfare Department. This is intended to streamline the entire process of establishing the full medical college, ensuring the facilities—including labs, operation theatres, and other necessary infrastructure—adhere to the strict guidelines set by the Medical Council of India (MCI). The proposed site for the project is in Bannur.

Rai also took the opportunity to address political criticism, stating that the government has fulfilled its promise despite "apprehensions" and "mocking and criticising" from opposition parties who had failed to take similar initiatives when they were in power. "Chief Minister Siddaramaiah has kept his word," he added.
