Puttur, Dec 4: The fifth additional sessions court in Puttur has sentenced a man to death, who was found guilty of murdering his two children, mother- in-law and sister-in-law, on Tuesday.
The accused is Ramesh Naika, an employee of a public sector bank. Naika had killed his two children, Kruthika and Bhuvan, by pushing them into a pond on June 16, 2010. He had murdered his mother-in-law Saraswathi and sister-in-law Savitha in Tumkur and hidden their bodies in a water tank, on June 14.
After murdering his mother-in-law and sister-in-law, he had returned to Mangalore on June 16, where his wife (who is a banker) stayed and while she was at work, he took their children in a taxi to Ardhamoole near Panaje in Puttur, where he drowned them in a pond.
Public Prosecutor Shivaprasad Alva said that the copy of the death sentence will be sent to the High Court. Once the High Court approves it, it will come into force.
The reason to this killing spree is said to be his opposition to his sister in law Savitha's relationship with a person belonging to a different community and the subsequent support for the relationship by his mother in law and wife Sundari. During the argument, it came to the fore that Naika had taken care of the education of Savitha and also seen that she was employed. Later, he allegedly had physical relationship with her. When Savitha fell in love with an employee where she was working, Naika being a control freak resisted. When none of his family members including his wife opposed Savitha's decision, Naika decided on this extreme step.
On Monday the Public Prosecutor Shivaprasad Alva argued for death sentence while the counsel for Naika said it was not the rarest of the rare case; hence he should not be given death penalty.
The counsel for accused said the crime was committed during a moment of mental imbalance to which the public prosecutor said no documents had been presented to prove this aspect. The counsel said the accused wanted to look after his mother, serve the society and open an old age home in the rest of his natural life after serving sentence, the public prosecutor argued that since the accused presents his wish to survive shows that the person did not have remorse for the crime he committed that too murdering his two children.
To an argument that accused suspected his wife's fidelity, public prosecutor argued that this is the first time the point was being raised and all through the hearing it was presented that the couple were happy with each other. The public prosecutor argued that since he suspects of his wife's fidelity now, there is a chance that eh may try to exact revenge when he is out on parole if he is given life sentence.
